If you want subdued soundtrack, try the Myst (game) soundtrack.
If you want something interesting and unique, try the Black Hawk Down soundtrack.

If you have these two, you might as well get Komm Susser Todd from the EoE soundtrack.

Airwolf. I just love that theme for some reason. Sure its heavy on the keyboards. but it was the 80's what do you expect.

and I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the Enterprise theme song. I still think they should have stuck with classical pieces, but I do like the postive message of the Enterprise song.

Neon Genesis Evangelion? If you like Decisive Battle, then try Angel Attack I - III, The Beast, and the unit themes (Unit 00 Theme, Unit 01, Unit 02, etc.). Personally I find anything used in Evangelion great music (hint hint)
Vision of Escaflowne's Japanese opening theme is good too.
Then there're the SquareSoft soundtracks. Anything with Final Fantasy on them are worth trying (battle music in particular, as you seem to have noticed ), then there's the Xenogears Original Soundtrack.
Then there are two film soundtracks by Vangelis I adore - 1492 - Conquest of Paradise and Blade Runner. The title song of 1492 (C of Paradise) is highly recommended.
And where is Christopher Franke (Babylon 5)?! The season five opening theme is one I'm most fond of. And I know a site where you can DL the battle music of the B5 game that was never finished; I won't post an URL here since I'm not sure of the legal stuff. ICQ or PM me if you want it.
The theme to the film The Mission (in the vein of Conquest of Paradise really). The Chase from Midnight Express, a classic. Who Are You?, theme of C.S.I., and finally the 90's The Saint film had a nice remake of the original theme by Orbital.
Edit - Oxygene Part IV by Jean Michel Jarre. It was used as the theme of a Finnish science TV programme so it counts.

Well, I've got one or two tracks from the Black Hawk Down soundtrack, and I'm currently downloading Komm Susser Todd from the EoE soundtrack, but my net connection is so slow (something to do with high latency on my ethernet card) that it'll be about another hour.
Keep the suggestions coming people!

Grosse Pointe Blank - very retro and cool.
Gladiator soundtrack is great too - very good for playing in the background while Civving i think.
'Battle with Magus' from the Crono Trigger soundtrack is another must-have, along with anything you can get from the Shining Force 1 and 2 themes.
highest recommendation:
Zone of Enders soundtrack - Kiss Me Sunlights is beautiful.
also get the Transformers theme.
