I'm probably the only one in the world (or at least among civers) that thought Conquest of the New World Deluxe was far superior to Colonization. I just didn't think that Colonization was that good. In fact, I found the very best game dealing with that time period and world event was the Civ2 scenario, Struggle for Empire. Oh well.

Actually, I think Conquest of the New World Deluxe is great too. While the idea for the game was obviously a direct ripoff of Colonisation, the implementation was completely different and arguably superior. But in some ways it's like comparing chalk and cheese - two completely dfiiferent games giving completely different experiences. I'd have loved to have seen them update the graphics using a 3D engine. As it is, zooming right in and moving an explorer really feels like exploring new land (you can't see what's just up ahead), even if it is chunky graphics.

In and of itself, Colonization is a poor game. There are a lot of things that I would like to see improved and augmented. There are also a lot of things that annoy me about it. However there is nothing that I would require fundamentally changed - the core game is excellent which is why it is a favourite.

The only thing in the game that needs changing is the graphics. It was fanboys like you who ruined Civ 3.

No I'm not.
I'm analagously saying that the car is crap but the engine is brilliant but underutilised.

...Such as
...I thought it was great- the only problem was the strange bug that allowed the English to lose all their ships and not send 5 musketeers; thereby I have been in revolt for 20 years against a depleted English fleet... enable to trade- but that's more of a bug than a problem.

The game play is perfect, and shouldn't be tampered with in the slightest.
It has an exciting opening: establishing your colonies and exploration. My favourite part of any TBS is always the setting up of my empire.
It has an engrossing middle section: consolidating your colony. Getting all the right workers, [hunting down those tobacco planters is always pleasurably elusive], building up your forts, improving the land, trading, dealing diplomatically with your rivals and the indians.
Then the game has an incredible finale when you must test your work with fire. No anti-climatic spaceship race, no dull ascent to transcendence when all your foes are already smashed by war.
Colonization is the only TBS that keeps me interested the entire way to the end. Most others become boring once you are established and slowly defeating each enemy one by one.
To anyone who wishes to make changes, or has a problem with Colonization - go and play something else. All an update needs is new graphics.
Bkeela.

There were some obvious exploits.........I used to keep loads of horses in ships and my soldiers never died in the battle at the end, since the first loss converted a dragoon to a normal soldier.

Sure there were lots of loop holes but it was still a great game for its time.
