Hard to decide, Blizzard and Paradox are both excellent. EUII has probably been my favorite game ever.

What is the criteria?
Best currently? If so, then Wolf and Doom should not have been used for ID, since most of the team from those games have left.
I don't really care though, I just voted Firaxis.

No specific criteria, just whoever you think makes the best games.

Bioware? Oh yeah, they make some of those PC RPGs don't they?

Honestly, I was struggling to think of someone who made PC RPGs, they just slipped my mind I suppose.

You have Fallout Boy as your avatar and you are supporting Bioware, one of the reasons why there isn't a Fallout 3 yet?

Bioware also put out the Baldur's Gate series along with Neverwinter Nights.
Interplay put out Fallout 1 and 2. I like them as well.
Microprose was the granddaddy of them all, but they no longer exist as they once were.

blizzard. flat out.
warcraft 2 set the standard for RTS. starcraft took it to another level.
wc3 meshed a little RPG into a RTS, and did a fairly good job of it.
don't forget diablo

It seems I have left out a few developers, judging by all the banana votes. Oh well, start your own poll!

Blizzard is good. But I never liked RTS games. Diablo2 was the main reason I was big on Blizzard. But 2 games cannot comapre to Biowares 3 games I like. Interplay only had 2 I can think of right now, but I live those two more than Blizzard's two.
Microprose had the most games I liked but they no longer put out games.

Rebellion.
The programmers there are the most informative and very easy to get along with. They even helped me personaly when I had a prob with a block of AI code that was in the released AvPGE source code.
Cavedog
It's a shame these guys didn't last. They were a great company and listen to new ideas.
Companies that I loathe to no end
Raven
These guys think that nothing is their fault. Whenever someone has a prob with a game of theirs, they flam you then say you need more RAM (yeah, like 2GB of RAM is not enough).
LucasArts
For letting companies like Raven screw up thier games.
Bethesda
Though not as evil as Raven, they do have a MAJOR ego thing. Some of programmers will bite back and even get the mods of their site to perma-ban you.
Monolith/Sierra
Similar to Bethesda, and I did get perma-ban from avpnews.com for not liking AvP2. I guess my reasons were too good.
So as you can see, I came across lots of jerks. It's making me think twice about being a programmer myself. Do I really want to be a total jerk like these guys? I think I would take a course in PR before I go any further, or at least anger managment. I am Irish so that might be a problem.

what about old game developers like Electronic Arts. They put out the Bard's tale series.
edit: not to mention EA is still around and puts out EA sports games like Madden NFL football.

I thought Tropico was developed by PopTop (or was it GoD?) and AoW was by Triumph Studios.

i loved diablo2 and used to play it on hardcore all of the time till i felt like i was getting carpal tunnel and had to stop

T-Pop (Tropico, Age of Wonders)
Triumph made AOW and AOW2, while PopTop made RT2 and Tropico. All PopTop did for AOW2 was some of the movie work, they didn't actually make the game.
I voted for these guys more because Phil Steinmeyer, who founded PopTop, was the desinger for HOMM2... and AOW1&2 helps too, of course.

Does the company have to make games right now? I'd vote for Microprose UK myself... Mostly because of UFO: Enemy Unknown, actually, but also a lot of other classics...

I'd vote for Stella Polaris Development Team, but as it's not a company and not listed, I have to abstain. Well, I agree with Ari about MicroProse and I'd be delighted to vote at them, but as they're not included and Big Huge Games is out too, I have to vote Firaxis. But good choice too.
