Civilization Board Game
Just curious if anyone's got it and tried it out. What's it like?

(This is referring to the new game, not the old AH Mediterranean game.)

Well, it's a complex game. The reason computer games got so popular was because it took a lot of record keeping out of the player's hands ... this puts the record keeping right back in.

There are two modes ... a simplified mode that's almost pointless and the detailed mode, which feels like Civ with some obvious tweaks for board gameplay. It's very deep but, similar to something like Squad Leader, you will spend some time learning how to do things.

I saw it on sale, but at $60.00, I'll pass for now. I'd rather play the "real" game anyway.

There are player reviews on the publisher's sight, www.eaglegames.net The reviews are mixed so far (just like PTW!).

700+ pieces, cards for Wonders ... you have to see it to believe it. I think hardcore Civ fans will like it ... the negative reviews may be coming from board game people who don't have that affection for Civ.

I haven't played the CIV board game, but Civ fans choosing a board game definitely can't go wrong with Settlers of Katan, and its companion game Seafarers.

Relatively simple gameplay, complex and intense interactions with the other players.

Personally, I'm an addict. The oddest part of the game is that there is no wars, per se. The largest army can contribute to a victory score, but you cannot directly assault your opponent's infrastructure.

Oddly enough, this "Peace" ruling makes for a more cutthroat game than the most aggresive session of Risk I've ever played.

I noticed the advert in my copy of PTW and wondered if this was the old Avalon Hill board game updated? That's the first "Civilization" I ever played way back in 1979 or so. It took a loooooong time to complete.

...but it is still a very good game and it has for sure good reasons that it was inspiring CIV to be created

...also a very good game, and i agree that espeacially CIV Players should like it. I think most of the CIV Players like most the beginning, when you are going to expand with your settlers and my feelings in the beginning of "Settlers of Catan" are nearly exactly the same
