Country Least Likely To Remain Intact
We all know the various countries that have problems staying intact and we all know the countries that seem mostly the same from one end to the other.
Give us your prediction about the next country that will split up. And tell us if it will go the peaceful route( Like Chezhoslavika) or the not so peaceful way (like Yougoslavia.)

The next country that could split will either be Iraq or Indonesia. Indonesia, if nothing is done to ease problems, will crumble. The Armed Forces will become very brutal in keeping the country intact, and slowly but surely it will fall apart and very violently. Hopefully a new leader will rise to power that will prevent that from happening.

The last thing I saw a religious preacher did was ask for $5 in a "generous pledge" to help his bank account in Zurich, erhm, some starving kids in Zimbabwe.

Damn that was fast! If the Turks did not clamp down so hard on the Kurds, I would agree about Irak.
Indonesia, at least as far as Sumatra, Bali and Java go, is unlikely to collapse. Every other large island...

Interesting that for all their problems, India and China seem nowhere near splitting up into their various component nationalities.
Closer to home, if the SNP get a majority in the Scots parliament, propose an independence referendum and win it, I don't really see what anyone could do about it...

When I was in Italy, some people talked about a north south rift but not to the extent that Italy would split up. but maybe.
Isn't there an Italian here on the forums?

You think Germany's going to fall apart?
I can see Italy, because there is, or has been, a northern breakaway movement, but what independent states would form from Germany?

Well for the first two I see Germany breaking up into a bunch of tiny, feuding principalities. They will be called things such as "Brandenburg" and "Hannover". While Italy will break into a number of smaller states, such as "Venice", "The Papal States", and "Parma".
At least that's my take on the geo-political side of things.

OK to sum up the least fantastic options to me:
1. Indonesia. East Timor set the example and Irian Jaya may be close. Violent.
2. Russia. The chechens already had a taste of independence and Putin policy is exacerbating everyone. Violent.
3. Quebec and Scotland (from what I read in that post) seem like the peaceful possibilities.
Everyone else seems like a far shot.
