Oh my.
A lot of strategy on deity through the early game seems to boil down to, stay out of the AI's way. Keep a low profile, and wait a few centuries or so (for superior human micro-management to s - l - o - w - l - y accumulate.
Not that I'm any kind of expert, though. I've faced similar SOD's myself. Good luck Jawa!
....
Jawa?
Anybody seen Jawa?
He was here just a minute ago. Over there, standing right near that light blue smear on the ground.

I'm sorry I still don't have time to write this up yet. Here is a quick summary
I was forced to retire by the atzecs. I could not make them happy diplomatically, and I don't stand a chance military wise. I was able to manage the Iroqoius as a neighbor put the Green Machine just kept rollling on.

I decided if I really want to get my 1st Deity win I should try an easier civ. Here is my 2nd attempt for a Deity win.

A medium start. Flood plains can be a problem but also allow for fast growth. I decided to move to the plain across the river (couldn't remember if that helped disease or not).

The move was good after all since it brought Ivory into range. Unfortunately the Carthages brought warriors over and popped two goodie huts before I could build my 1st warrior. Both huts popped barbs and I was swarmed. I lost my worker and some tile improvements. 7 Carthagian warrior came over in the next 5 turns and the game was quickly lost.

2 losses is not a big deal, so I'll try for a 3rd time. Beside I need to get a good Deity game up and running. I'm trying to start a statregy thread to encourage others to critique my play style. But this damn thread is turning into a story thread (about me losing)

I liked this start better. I'm still stuck on a flood plain but I have a possible IW start. Plenty of food and shields all I need to due is get that 2nd city up and running so all of my eggs are not in the same basket.

Everything was going great and then... One turn away from finishing my settler disease struck. I lost 2 people and switched to temple. My worker was right next to a goodie hut. Remembering my last game when someone else popped my huts, I decided to pop it myself. Bad idea. Soon I found out I was alone on an island and decided to quit (this just won't help my chariot rush).

The other civs on this land mass had great areas. Lots of Grassland. While this start have been an easy win on Monarchy, it would be quite a challenge for me on Emperor and since I'm playing Deity....

Not bad. That goodie hut was empty. This time the Mongols got an insane start. They had 4 cities before my first one.

The Mongol horde forced my early retirement. Look at how many cities they have (Yellow). And keep in my I'm rexing AFAP.

Back to my theory of needing the right civ. I'm going to try France with the idea that the Commercial trait will help since I can't outperform the AI in the early game.

Okay how many times can I randomly be on a flood plain. And once again disease strikes the turn before my settler is complete.

For those of you keeping score I have lost 6 times (America, Egypt, Egypt, China, China, and France).
Lucky #7
This thread will now start being what it was supposed to be. Hopefully, my first Deity win.
