Minor D&D 3rd Edition Question
The captivating song of a harpy. There don't appear to be any rulings on this - does she need to concentrate to maintain it, and can you allow a PC another will save by "slapping" them (party member performs touch attack, AC 10) as per hypnotise and sleep?
It strikes me that without at least one of these it's a heinously powerful ability. Particularly if it happens to captivate your bard...

Don't know about the #rd addition, but in the 1st edition it last a random number of turns. Even if she stopped singing.

The Monster Manual states that "the effect continues for as long as the harpy sings." The question is, what does it take to stop her singing? If she loses concentration, does she stop and then have to restart?

Then it should be like any other kind of magic, once she is hit her song should cease, but slapping the victim won't do much good.

sounds like a case of "DM's discretion"
but why slapping? a nice swing of a 2-handed sword...

If I were you, I'd have the "slap attack" be performed as a coup de grace, i.e. the attack automatically succeeds (and, say, allows for a second save with a small bonus) but takes a full round to perform.
Just my opinion. I'd send an email to Wizards or the editors of Dragon magazine if you want an official ruling.

Doesn't the harpy song make the other person charmed, if it does then a "slap attack" wouldn't work since it the other person will defend itself from anything BUT the harpy.

Is that what it does? I thought that the song just stunned the other person. Ah well...

Just improvise- concentration check DC 17 or so... That's what we always do in our games
Although my group started getting annoyed with me when I started making up monsters and die checks without writing anything down

The effect is "a sonic, mind-affecting charm", and indeed the character will walk towards the harpy and not resist her attacks - although walking through a dangerous area allows for a second save. Defining dangerous is tricky, I feel, and is DM's discretion.
However, I'm the DM.
So I think concentration check on the harpy sounds about right (harpy is untrained, CON 10 (+0), so the bonus is 0, so I might make it 10 + damage - same as level 0 spells). I also think a slap won't be enough - but if my party is clever enough to pretend to attack a captivated person I'll allow that.
I'll also check the boards and FAQ, although I'm not sure I can be bothered posting anything.

!st edition it lasted a random number of turns, 2nd edition you got to keep making saves until you snap out of it, 3rd edition I haven't a clue about.

I would assume a save a turn... that's how most saves vs. death work.

I agree with Chowlett. It's not cantrip level ability, but she has no modifiers so you cann't make it too hard for her to maintain concetration.
