Results of my first issue decision
Yesterday I recieved a report that ANimal Rights Activists were growing violent and burning fast food restaurants because of the inhuman treatment of chickens. My choices were: ban inhuman food practices, crack down on the vigilantes or impose tax on meat.
The results of my legislation came in today:
"Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed." and Political Freedom has gone from "very good" to "good".
HA! That aughtta teach them! No one takes the law into thier own hands on my shift!
how did you guys fare?

My first issue was Public Nudity. I gave them the right to run around naked (but didn't mandate nudity, as was one of the options), and none of the three meters changed. However, in my country description, it notes that many of my citizens run around naked. Interesting...

I've been fighting crime twice. On the first occassion I decided to increase police spending, thus increasing my tax rate and weakening the economy, and the second time I decided to increase educational spending, with the same effects but on a longer timeframe. Then there was an issue regarding the right of corporations to fund political parties. I turned it down, since IMO one of the big problems of politics is money-grubbing. So my political freedom grade dropped as well.

Religous whackos proposed banning the latest harry potter book, instead I issued a statement encuraging people to read fantasy books and excercise their imagination, and now everyone's reading harry potter books.
Including the 14 year-old boys who used to sell lemonade (it was Ubinia's most prominent buisness). Which put a stop to all those entrepreneuring little brats! well worth having people read harry potter, in my opinion. (Now I just need a way of ending the despicable black-market trout farming buisness which has taken place of lemonade selling as the leading industry)
P.S. I'm appalled that the Imperial Republics, a close neighbor of Ubinia, would jail animal liberationists. Truelly despicable!

An organized group of doctors has petitioned the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Alien Races to make donation of vital organs mandatory upon death.
For obvious civil & human rights reasons, Parliament will reject the petition.

I just now faced the Coporate Political Funding issue, and turned them down. Corporate bastards...
On a different note, it's good to see that my small nation is growing overnight. Up to six million people.

i'm surprised that your economy is listed as "struggling". i would've thought that you'd have booming tourism

I've yet to see the result of my first issue, it was "Should democracy be compulsory"
Being the dictator that i am , i off course chose the least democratic decision.
Quote:
|
"This raises an interesting issue," says George W. Trax, your brother. "And that is: why do we need elections, anyway? Seems to me it would be much simpler if you just decided what was right, and did it. Wouldn't that save everyone a lot of time?"
|
other options were
Quote:
|
"Compulsory voting makes about as much as sense as having the death penalty for attempted suicide," says civil rights activist Dave Hanover. "You can't force people to be free! You can only give them the choice. Besides, if all those derelicts who can't be bothered to get off their ass once every few years voted, who would they elect? I shudder to think."
|
and
Quote:
|
"It's not contradictory at all," argues political commentator Charles Hanover. "The fact is, if not everyone votes, the outcome isn't truly representative. Some groups--like elderly gun nuts--vote more often than others. That's why always we always end up with such terrible politicians."
|
This shouldn't change my political freedom meter to much, since it's already at "Outlawed".
I'm still pondering though what to do with the civil rights, should i let it go up, or down....i'm thinking down with them, unless it's a strain on the economy, which is "Struggling" now

divorce rates were rising so i legalised gay marriages...it was either that or criminalise divorce, or fine those who don't call their spouse ''darling" at least once a day
parliament is preparing to initiate my decision as we speak.

The first was legalising gambling when children were found in casinos.
I said gambling was to be legal, so my crime rates went up but it helped my economy.
The second was if I was to let a Nazi rally be held in my capital. I denied it and now it is illegal to make racist remarks in public
It changed my civil rights from 'superb' to 'excellent' though - which is better?

I just passed my second edict.
The hospitals wanted to be able to pay people for their organ donations, can you imagine that? Turning the hospital into some sort of money-making buisness? As if I'm going to let people sell their colons when I don't even let them sell lemonade.
Passing this eddict may of reduced organ donations - and that's a decision of the people - but the important thing is that it reduced my economy from developing to fragile. My chief advisors are still looking for a way to end the black-market trout farming, though.
The next buisness of state will be to increase social services spending on the new budget, I think.

The names change randomly. My brother was not called 'Anne-Marie' a second ago...
"This raises an interesting issue," says Anne-Marie Summers, your brother. "And that is: why do we need elections, anyway? Seems to me it would be much simpler if you just decided what was right, and did it. Wouldn't that save everyone a lot of time?"
I decided to make people vote as the elderly vote the most and they choose conservatives too much

this is hilarious!
As you know, i'm the evil dictator...so here's another issue.
Quote:
|
People Request Not So Much Dictatorship, If That's All Right
Government Acts
The Issue
While effusively praising Lemmington's leadership and bowing repeatedly, a delegation has humbly requested that the government take a more "modernistic" view in the future.
The Debate
The High Minister for Finance, who also happens to be your brother, dismisses the claim. "What these people fail to realize is that you know what's best for them. The alternative is anarchy! I say stick to your course. And execute these wackos for treason."
This is the position your government is preparing to adopt.
"Perhaps the people could be given some more political freedoms," muses your Chief of Staff, who is your sister. "Is there really such harm in allowing public discussion of ideas? We could even have a real Opposition Party. One that isn't just full of your puppets, I mean."
[Accept]
|
It's clear what i chose off course

as a result, my taxes increased from 8% to 9% and political freedom dropped to outlawed
i'm undecided on my second issue regarding the national animal, polar bears.
"The fact is, the polar bear population is out of control," says Beef-Based Agriculture spokesperson George W. King. "We have to do something about them anyway, so why not market them as tasty snacks? We could have polar bear kebabs, polar bear pies, polar bear-on-a-sticks--the possibilities are endless! Let's not pass up this golden opportunity to provide a feast, if you will, for our economy."
"I agree that something needs to be done about polar bear over-population," says random passer-by Buy Winters, "but eating them? That's kind of gross. Let's just shoot the ones we have to and shovel their bodies into ditches like normal."
"I am shocked and appalled!" declared SPCA President Peggy Hanover. "If anyone needs to be culled, it's us humans. The polar bears were here first, remember? We need to take this as a sign to get our industry--agriculture in particular--to back off. The polar bear is part of what makes Eternal Cold a great nation!"
i'll either go with the first option (what does polar bear taste like? ) or dismiss the issue

My national animal is the Japanese schoolgirl. Wouldn't want to eat those.
I decided to accept cloning of human embryos for purposes of medical science. We shall see what will happen.

These unlawful disrespectful anarchists were damadgeing private and public property. The Federal government will not tolerate such undemocratic means of achieving goals. If they had gone through the proper channels of public governance then maybe the senate would not have been so hard handed. I'm all for animal rights, but don't mess with the system in the Federation. None of the Imperial Republics will have pity on you.
I hope this will be a lesson to them and next time they want to help the poor chickens on the bladed conveyor belts they think of their actions first. Then I will be the first to help them.
btw, I allowed free speach rascist soap operas to be governed by tv ratings and now:
"Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed and the alarmingly racist TV show 'Bigtopians Say the Darndest Things' is a hit". and the economy is now strong! I'm going to have to make sure it doesn't get out of hands though...

I have had five motions so far. One on Harry Potter, which I allowed through, so as to really annoy the religions sect; one on Euthanasia, which is now legal so long as the patient asks; one on minorities in soaps, where I told them to go away and leave the TV be; one on funding political parties, which is now outlawed from corporations; and the one on gambling, which I have no idea on. Should I outlaw it, let it run free, or dismiss it?

Undemocratic? What could be more democratic then people taking matters into their own hands and waging war on the evil corporations that exploit the earth and oppress the people! Your willingness to help corporations is truelly disturbing!
I say to all citizens of the Imperial Republics: Come to the Free lands of Ubinia, where you will be safe of prosecution, and ecuraged to take arms against the evil corporations and those who would harbour them!
