I just legalized euthanasia for terminal cancer patients.
My economy is still crap (54% taxes! bam!), but I have absolutely no crime, and my population of 6 million are described as 'compassionate', due to my renowned dedication to social welfare. The people are all nice, and happy. Truth be told, they're probably all hippies.

The Commonwealth of Pasiphae
"Live the life, don't die the death"
UN Category: New York Times Democracy
Civil Rights: Some Economy: Strong Political Freedoms: Excellent
Location: Apolyton
The Commonwealth of Pasiphae is a tiny, pleasant nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.
The small government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Commerce receiving almost no funds by comparison. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 7%. A healthy private sector is led by the Cheese Exports, Soda Sales, and Information Technology industries.
Crime is a serious problem. Pasiphae's national animal is the lion and its currency is the palus.

I've voted on several now. I have it set for 2 per day.
Coroporations want political say. I voted nay. I don't want them buying votes. I support individual rights, not corporate rights. Although that is sure to hurt my economy.
I supported cloning though. I can't remember what my other one was. My first of course was defense spending as I said earlier.

I had the "People Request Not So Much Dictatorship, If That's All Right" issue. I chose to allow more political freedoms. Hopefully I'll now get rid of the Corporate Police State label.

Nicely done Has anyone else had public nudity yet? I want that one. My people must be freed from the confines of tradition free to bare whatever they want (and besides, then I can hope some of Greater Finland's Japanese schoolgirls emigrate to Akiria )

So far I've:
Agreed with the civil libertarians and made all recreational drugs legal in my country.
Agreed with the environmentalists and banned cars.
Agreed with the trade unions and raised wages.

my allowance of polar bears for use as food boosted my economy to very strong and changed my major industries to include beef-based agriculture and exclude cheese. other recent decisions include police cameras in public places, a crackdown on protesting bicyclists, and not to impose tariffs on cheap imported automobiles

I let nazi sympathisers stage their rally in my capital. My civil rights improved, and my classification changed from "Capitalist paradise" to "Capitalizm". Next issue I got was from people complaining about too much free speech, so I put more restrictions in.

Campaign-finance reform was my first issue. I sided with those who wanted to keep money out of politics, though I must admit that the possibility of scrapping the political system altogether was quite tempting.

Great. Now 8-year olds have been spotted gambling in my casinos. In attempt to lower the outrageous crime rates in Townsville, I've banned gambling, which should drop me from my #11 ranking in today's UN report about gambling levels.

Genius! (Seems like it randomly picks phrases, so it can come together sounding like a SimCity 2000 newspaper.)
Had another decision, regarding free speech. Basically, I decided to grant unlimited free-speech rights, not giving a $##@ about any @#!@ing profanities my nation's kids will learn as a result.

Actually, they aren't that contradictory; just because you hold a right to be very important, doesn't mean it won't be curtailed.

My citizens want Tax Cuts!!. I was tempted to cut them to help my economy, but I didn't like the options. I did like the option to allow my citizens direct where they have their tax dollars go. This should have some interesting results.
And I too have had the political finance issue. I voted against business' contributing to campaigns. Don't like it one bit.

apparently my decision on campaign finance reform (banning corporate contributions), caused a drop in the economy from Very Strong to Good
on the bright side though, Eternal Cold went from Iron Fists Consumerists to Psychotic Dictatorship
next issue on the agenda is tax cuts (legislation pending) which are currently at 17%, over double the starting tax rate of 8%

I had an issue to make organ donation mandatory!!!!! Amazing. Being a libertarian I couldn't allow that. Now my description reads that I have the lowests organ donation rates. Oh well.
I'm kind of upset I got a repeat issue. They want more military spending. I voted no this time.

taxes dropped to 7% as a result of my tax cut decision. i've also refused to make organ donation mandatory, allowed limited mining of uranium deposits under the rainforest (what rainforest? the frozen one?). chose the first option in the petition for slightly less dictatorship issue, and selected a new religious advisor, the guy that will retire after his appointment

I decided not to give workers a raise and instead sided with the employers. The issue has been posted before IIRC.
Results:
- My UN category changed from "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise" to "Left-leaning College State"
- My progressive tax rate dropped from 73 % to a flat tax rate of 58 %
- My economy grade changed from "Imploded" to "Strong"
One single decision and my nation transformed entirely!

Well, corporations came to me asking for more power in politics. I responded by outlawing elections! That'll show 'em. I'm now a "Father Knows Best State" and Political Freedoms are Outlawed.

I took a little bit of a vacation, but have returned to settle the issues facing Ubinia...
1. The Police department proposes installing security cameras in public places - I refuse the proposal, I didn't even realise I had a police department, and I'm not about to let them spy on people.
2. Divorce rates are on the rise - I decide to make same-sex marriages legal, which will make that statistic rise for those who care about it, and abolish the fascist laws regarding homosexuality at the same.
3. Following a murder spree, a rival candidate has be gaining popularity off of people's emotions by campaigning for the death penalty - I, of course, will not stand for this manipulation of the people and will outlaw these sorts of politics, along with the death penalty.
4. Corporations ask to be able to donate money to political parties - The nerve! illegal corporations asking to be able to buy votes? I refused this, ofcourse!
5. Someone asked for the laws against nudity to be repealed - I decide to make nudity compulsory, clothes are oppresive - just like the corporate-culture that created them!

Tea Kaygia's TV soaps--famous around the region--have come under fire for their lack of ethnic diversity.
The Debate
"Every night my family and I sit down to watch 'The Brash and the Backstabbing'," says Dave Barry. "But where are the Liliputians like myself? Where are the Bigtopians? The Marche Noirians? People from those cultures can be just as brash and backstabbing, but we never see them on the screen. The government must act to remove this silent apartheid from our TV screens."
[Accept]
"Those Liliputians don't know how good they have it," says Freddy Barry, spokesperson for the Tasmanians Against Ethnic Stereotyping. "Tasmanians are on television all the time, but always in crude, stereotypical roles. The answer is not to enforce ethnic quotas, but to award government prizes for the positive portrayal of minorities. That'll work better, and be cheaper, too."
[Accept]
"The government should do what now?" says TV studio executive Hack Falopian. "You've got to be kidding. We make soaps here, not documentaries. I should be able to put whichever characters I want into my shows. Quotas! Government prizes! God save me! Hasn't the government got anything better to do? Why don't they just back off and let society work out these things on its own?"
[Accept]
