I was thinking primarily of loaning ships for transport to allied civs, and selling everything else to anybody who could cough up the gold.

, transports , great idea
we could even try to have both leasing and renting , why not even an option to buy the unit after so many turns , ....
one thing that we should have control over is the number of turns , ranging from a couple like two or three to forthy or more , .....
and we should have some other options also , like "if war breaks out between this and that units shall be made available at ones , ....
