things i miss about civilization 1
- stack of units falling if only one unit from the stack is defeated
- uncontrolled war declaration / peace making
- building two cities next to eachother squarewise
- copy protection questions
- attacking foreign units without consequence before contact is made
- foreign units settling in the middle of civilization
- settlers advancing attacks with quick rail building

What I really miss from Civ I is the random events...
earthquakes destroing cities
cities without barracks experiencing pirate raids
cities without aqueducts experiencing plagues
etc, etc (I don't remember them all)
Other than that, I don't miss civ I at all

Omg, the copy protection question were classic!
"In the Civilization manual, on the fifty-second page, in the 4 paragraph, in the second sentence, what is the ninth word?"

The copy protection on my exroomies Mac version asked what the preqs for various tech icons were. After a few false starts, my roomie and I spent a couple of hours copying out the tech advances, prerequistes and their icons.
(I later paid for CivII MPG, TOT, CivIII and PTW......I don't feel much guilt about not paying for Civ I )

Ahhh, the good ol' days of killing things before making contact. When you finally meet your victems, it's just "what phalanx? I didn't see any phalanxs on the way here... "
I do miss those little plane icons though...

- stack of units falling if only one unit from the stack is defeated
Are you mad man?!?! That was a ridiculous rule. Maybe someone can tell me what the original thought was behind this rule, 'cause it used to drive me mad!
The one rule I really miss was when one of your units was next to an enemy unit, it couldn't skirt around it. The unit either had to attack, sit still, or back away. This made choke points on land ( and fortified units outside of the city, in general ) very effective blockers.
But it general - Civ III rules!

I think the original post was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. At least that was the way I read it.

OMG no way, that was so lame.
- uncontrolled war declaration / peace making
Nah.
- building two cities next to eachother squarewise
Lame.
- copy protection questions
L-A-M-E.
- attacking foreign units without consequence before contact is made
That was fun, I totally forgot about that ability.
- foreign units settling in the middle of civilization
ANNOYING.
- settlers advancing attacks with quick rail building
Very unrealistic.
- sid meier in toga
Hehe OK.
Oh and I thought ZOC was incredibly lame too, man that used to annoy the heck outta me.

I agree. Nothing more annoying than landing a massive invasion force next to an enemy city, to have it attacked by a catapult stationed inside it, wiping out 10 units with one shot.
You can flag all units as having a "zone of control" in the editor, to return to some civ 1/2 type of blocking strategies.

Some being the important word, so don't go looking into the to change it as it was in civ I & II.
I prefer the ZOC of CIV III anyway

I had all the copy-protection questions memorised too. Not sure whether that's quite sad or quite admirable... maybe I just played too much...

I always thought the coolest thing was splitting an empire in two if you captured their capitol! Man, I lived for that glorious moment.
I also miss the random events, although I do remember doing a few "reloads" after adverse events happened to me.

building cities next to eachother was fun, you could make a megacity! Actually it should wopkr that is you do that then they combine and cool stuff happens.
attacking foreign units before contact was THE THING that I miss. Realistic too.
the copy protect question, why don't people use that anymore?

I miss the random events. And the copy protection questions were funny: "An usurper claims that you're not the true king!" or something like that. Good old days.

Thing I won't miss about Civ1: my veteran Knight destroys a Mech. Inf. fortified in a city.
I agree about the radnom events, though. Can anyone explain this one: volcano erupts near city without temple and next to a mountain? What's the connection?
And attacking before making contact only worked at sea, is that correct or was it only in Civ2?

I guess I don't understand why anyone has Civ I on the computer, although I did put Civ II back on the computer, but I guess I could dig up Civ I, but then I just don't know why and if I want to do that, since I have other games, that may be on the computer first.

I miss Napoleon.
I miss the foreign civ's advisors in the negotiation screen.
I miss even more about civ2...cease fires, food caravans, less randomness in battles, good working scenario editor...sigh...

Hey! Come on, people!
What Civ 1 had that no game since has had was great leader animations and dialogue! No PC beating around the bush... and the looks on the advisors' faces in the background can't be beaten!

from civ1,2
pretty looking farms
civil wars
spies (female) /diplomat units
caravans
small music/sound effects: like battle win/loss sound, the short music played accompanying another civ's envoy (eg. "the battle hymn of republic" melody when lincoln wants to talk), the nuke explosion sound when one builds manhattan project, the sirens of nuke being dropped.
to me, its the little things that stay in my head after years...you only appreciate them when u notice civ3 doesnt have them...they DO make a difference...

Yes, I agree. Only Civ1 had a good City View. Even now, ten years later, is better than the curent one.

What about that god-awful sound system, that always wakes up my birds?
Classic games are generally good. But I think we can be glad that they decided to improve Civilization. Later versions, though, became unplayable when you learned how much micromanagement was needed to play correctly.

If the city had a temple, the gods could be appeased by sacrificing some virgins, throwing them into the volcano...
