Anyone would think they don't want to make it easy for pirates.

lol, Spike, why would i need a 56k modem (i have one you know ). I also have cable connection.
I meant internet TCP/IP connection for directplay, not modem connection for directplay
My friends could play aok on the zone with a pirated version (i couldn't as the zone wouldn't install on my comp for some reason)
that's why i was wonderin if it was possible here too...not necessarily the zone or ESO but just internet tcp/ip connection for directplay

As I posted AOM does not support direct IP from behind a NAT router (though Solver indicates this may have changed). If you host with a 56K modem the IP the game detects will be the external one it needs. If you are behind a NAT router it will pick up the internal IP. Now you can route the packets from the external IP of the NAT router to the internal machine but due to the way AOM works it needs the relevant ports to be open for both inbound and outbound packets. In theory if you can achieve this it should work, but I did just that, and it didn't.
ESO gets around the problem via some funky maneouvres....it is not an issue whether you are behind a NAT router to play on ESO.

Actually, you just need a legal CD-Key.

Wrong. If you got illegal game, it has a modified exe. And the patch doesn't install over a modified exe.

LOL. You don't attempt to patch the cracked exe!! You patch the original exe (which you kept if you are smart) and get a crack for the patched exe.
Hypothetically that is.

That is not true these days.......gamez are usually cd images for you to burn, with a cracked exe also provided, so you have access to both the cracked exe and the original.

Well Spike, you're obviously a warez expert, so I rest my case .
Yep, I kicked FP's ass... maybe I will again .

I have. My rating has dropped back down to the 1600 region from being up around 1660 at one time.
I've been playing as either Thor or Odin, and Norse is my favourite Civ, but my micro skills are pretty much non-existant.
I always do dumb stuff like leave my food gatherers sitting idle for a couple of minutes while I'm distracted with something else.

Have you been able to play at all on ESO yet, Spike?
btw, I was in Southampton on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. I considered coming to knock on your office door on Tuesday to try and give you a fright ... but I had to rush to get the bus.
They've changed the Uni a lot since I left.
Anyway, I don't mean to get this thread jacked.
Sorry.

You would have been welcome.
To get straight back on topic I haven't played any MP yet.......I'd like to though.......I may have to take the drastic step of buying the game.

The thing is......I have too many games.....and no time in which to play them. I am a semi-competitive quake3 player, so there goes some of my gaming time. 'Poly munches some time generally........work quite a lot, gf quite a lot........leaving little room for another game. I already have games I want to try MP (Civ3, Medieval Total War - this game I bought and haven't even played SP) and I've been meaning for ages to try some Warcraft3 MP again, because it's a great game, and the day of the orcs (my race) is upon us.
AOM looks fun, and I will try MP at some point.......hopefully soon.
