Anorexia and Bulemia
What do you think of these disorders? (sorry to lump them together) They seem to be a modern occurrence, so can they rightly be categorized as a disease? Are people who suffer from them at personal fault, suffering a true disease, or victims of modern day obsessions?

As I search the net for basic information *hits self for not going to a f*cking library for these things instead*
Answer a few questions to help define the group. Is this woman anorexic?
I'd call her a dream, keep in mind it's from a pro-anorexia site though (not sure if it's a joke)

It's most definitley a mental disease just as depression is.
What I found helps my patients is analyzing the Pro-Centre.

Naw, that chick is just normal. Anorexic people tend to be ungodly thin. Look at that chicks legs. She's normal not super thin.

I'm frightened that it was part of a fashion show. The shock value of her frame must have been part of raising interest. Kind of like when Armani or Prada or someone sent a male model out in these tight pants with an erection (on purpose)

It is a modern day obsessive disorder IMO, but one with a 10% fatality rate as well as other very serious health complications. I tend to think that as with most disease the person afflicted is not at fault, but nonetheless bears the primary responsibility to get help and cooperate in their treatment.

#2 diffenently has a major eating disorder. I say ban her and who ever approved of her getting up on stage from any fashion shows until they get beat with a wet noodle. :whip:

Okay now THAT one is ****ed up. If you had shown that picture about starving kids they would be the exact same size.
I don't know how old that girl is but certainly she isn't eating enough.

Bad joke
My mum had bulemia for a short spell. I've always been happy with my weight but my parents are always critical, and after changing some medications I've lost a lot more and am concerned. I know I don't have any sort of eating disorder, although right now I'm trying to stuff my face with anything easy. Everyone sees bits and pieces of fat on them in the mirror, but those are things that can take shape into muscle
In any case, it seems 99% of the sufferers are women

...but as there are concrete accounts of mental illness within pre-modern history, does it not seem as something that was produced outside of the body?

I've heard though that latley more and more of them are men.
When you say your parents are critical of you, do you mean they are critical of your weight? Do they say you are too thin?
That's really messed up, your parents are the #1 place where you get your esteem from. Have you told them to quit criticizing you or are they the type that you can't say something like that to?

Problem with this pic is that I find her face to be absolutely enticing - it's not as shallow as most who suffer. What if she just had slightly rounded facial features which were motivating her to change, despite the cost to the body?

It's probably because she's got botox injections.

Of course, and that offers up whether or not it really is a disease. Can it be taken as that when there is nothing genetic or "poison" source aquired? Too much sugar may cause diabtes, and that is a disease - but are we saying that too many billboards, and fashion culture are the poison source of this raw human condition? It seems rather subjective, especially in that this human condition emerges so briefly on the timeline of man

I see this as a problem with alot of girls, they only look at their face only, and it looks loose and chubby to them, even if they have really nice bodies. So they think that by starving themselves that it will change their facial features.

Well semantically whether it is a disease or not, it is certainly a problem. The poison you are referring to in this case comes from external factors that often times are so subtle that we aren't even aware they are playing over and over in our heads until we actually stop and listen and realize that we are being bombarded with images of waifish women.

I had some responses about this in another thread. What was the other thread that was talking about anorexia?
It's another one of those subjects that women blame men for- that obviously I don't agree with.

Yeah I agree she looks okay.
Sometimes it's hard to tell though because of the heavy eye makeup, and the hair is professionally done. Usually the hair is the easy tip off.

#3 is just on the thin side. She is definitely under weight but I doubt she has a serious eatting disorder.

Well the typical comments range from:
"blabla get some meat on those bones" (with an added smile
"You're like a fragile creature, I can feel your heart tremble when I hug you"
To:
"Nutrition is really important. There's all sorts of good supplements and stuff if you're on the run..."
"We're worried about you..."
(2 part)
"No mother, I'm actually bulemic - haven't you noticed how unnaturally white my teeth are lately?"
"Oh, I know - I've heard you in there a few times late at night. I'm not joking (smile)" - Responding to my sarcastic remark (jokingly?)

#4 Sorry they're all fashion oriented, but I think it's fitting in description as the industry is seen as the main poison - and the ones who push the limits in showing it off
This is a tough one, due to lighting, the dress, and obviously her size. I give it a pass - she'd make a fine gf. I am particularly interested in the reactions on this one
