i dig it in the sense that one day we'll be able to view / interpert the thoughts of animals, but i doubt we'll be able to "communicate" in any meaningful way, in terms of conveying an idea to the dolphins and having them understand / reply.

I can dig it... it's just that from what I've read at http://www.johnclilly.com a year or so ago doesn't exactly assure one of the sanity of the guy who did this research...

I had enough nuts at Christmas.
"One time, I went out to sea in the Virgin Islands and took some LSD. We went alongside a female whale with a calf. She turned up and looked at me with her one eye and zapped me for twenty minutes. There was so much information that I can't possibly remember. The information came in the form of visual pictures."-JCL

Very true... he has some innaresting ideas, but some border on the stupid... that said I am a firm believer in the genius/madman theory.
I think dolphins rock, frankly. I don't know about Lilly's specific theories, but I do believe dolphins have some sort of language which could possibly be interpreted by us, and vice-versa. Lilly's past research is actually pretty good, he's made a lot of good advances in understanding the dolphin brain. And I can't help but like his theory that dolphins (and whales) have some sort of 'network' of communication underwater. I just think they're cool.

Most species have communication, its whether they have refined vocabulary and grammar that will define whether communication of ideas and concepts (beyond the primal or the trained) are possible.

Agreed. I make no guesses as to how dolphins communicate with one another, but the important thing (at least as far as Mr Lilly is concerned) is whether they can communicate with us.
I'd like to think that even if dolphins communicate in a method unfathomable to us, they could learn to communicate with us. This would obviously require training, but if an agreed language format could be found, it could lead to the communication of, as you say, meaningful ideas and concepts.
Lilly's ideas seem to involve touch screens (for the dolphins to bump their noses on!) and interpreting the sounds made by the dolphins through high-quality underwater mics, and returning sounds to them via underwater speakers.
Whether his ideas are crap or not, I love the fact that he is trying, and actually believes what he says.
What do you say, Sagacious one, can there be meaningful communication between humans and dolphins?

I don't see why not. Some primates, such as the Gorillas and Chimps, have be able to learn sign language and use it to demonstrate abstract thoughts.

A tired dolphin drifted to the edge of the pool when he arrived. Makakai greeted him with a trinary poem too quick to catch, but it sounded amiably nasty. Something about his sex life. Dolphins had been telling humans dirty jokes for thousands of years before men finally started breeding them for brains and for speech, and began to understand. Makakai might be a lot smarter than her ancestors, Jacob thought, but her sense of humor was strictly dolphin.

Speaking of dolphins, the song I'm currently listening to is:
Dead Can Dance & Tangerine Dream: Piece for Solo Flute and Dolphin Dance
... and it rocks. Well, a little. It's the best song I know for getting into the right mood, but otherwise it's rather bland (if you can use that word for music).

Japanese toymaker Takara has marketed a device called the "Bowlingual" which translates dog barking into Japanese. There are now working on an upgrade that will allow you to receive emails from your dog while you're at work.
