UN Resolution! Expedition of Resolution Votes
Expedition of Resolution Votes
A resolution to increase democratic freedoms.
Quote:
|
Category: The Furtherment of Democracy
Strength: Significant
Proposed by: Thinkers
Description: Simple observation notes that there are several proposals on the docket to be voted on in the coming weeks. However, at the current pace, and with the certain increase in proposals in the future, the UN will soon be swamped with proposals waiting for votes. This resolution is to decrease the voting time allowed on resolutions to just two days. This amount of time will give interested nations time to debate the details, and yet still allow queued proposals to reach the UN floor in a timely manner.
Votes For: 321
Votes Against: 102
Voting Ends: Mon Dec 30 2002
|
At the moment we have 4 days to make up our minds. I find two days far too short, especially considering that some of our region memebers have jobs to do. Bear in mind that the next resolution is an amendment to this one making the voting period 3 days, which I will consider voting for. As for now I urge my fellows Apolyton nations to vote against this referendum.
Regards,
Lord Chairman Aahz Capone,
The Federation of Imperial Democracies,
Apolyton Region

The Commonwealth of Alien Races
Friends,
The Commonwealth of Alien Races is currently not a member of the United Nations. Our application, however, is pending and, when granted UN membership, the Commonwealth will vote NAY on this referendum but YEA on the indicated amendment, should it come to pass.
My warmest regards during these happy times.
Sincerely,
Prime Minister
Prime Minister Reismark Basheerin
Commonwealth of Alien Races
Region of Apolyton

Excellent, thank you Prime Minister Reismark Basheerin.
I have discussed this issue at the United Nation Forum at nationstates.net and it seems for now that opinions are mixed but leaning slightly towards nay. We must rally our forces, gentlemen.

Ahem. Despite not being part of this game, I have been looking at the site, and I would like to point out this post, posted by the site admin as an announcement in the UN forum at Nationstates:
Quote:
|
I recommend that UN Delegates don't approve proposals that want to tweak how the game works, e.g. "Expedition of Resolution Votes" and "Random Assigning of Nations."
While this does get people to vote on whether such a change would improve gameplay, it:
- doesn't mean I'll implement it
- takes up space that could be used for real UN resolutions
- will have possibly unintended effects on all UN members (the two examples mentioned will, if passed, increase political freedom in all nations)
A better way is to make your suggestion in the Technical forum (with a poll, if you like), and argue your case there.

One more thing. Am I the only one who finds this disturbing?
Take good note of the name, UN statistics, and currency.

The Commonwealth of Pasiphae will vote YES. There is no need for more time, as most of us are on at sometime during a two day period.

perhaps it would be better to propose that more than one resolution be voted upon at once. say, maybe 3 instead of just one. Each subcommittee of the UN could work upon their resolution and then present it to the General Assembly

The Free Republic of Greater Finland has joined the UN as well. Should we begin to consider the appointing of a delegate, so that we can gain more influence on the level of selecting which resolutions are voted on? Or are we too squeamish yet to trust our UN votes to the hands of another Apolytoner?

Once in the UN, simply endorse another UN member and the one with the most endorsements becomes the delegate.

AFAIK, there's no way to speed up entry into the UN; you just have to wait.

The UN! Though there may be a few well-meaning nations, they are predominantly a group of meddlesome busybodies forcing their will upon others, placidly ignorant of the desires of those they oppress!

OOC: Ok then. /OOC
As far as the Republic of Centralis can discover, there is no way for any member state to accelerate the bureacratic processes of the UN. If you wish to gain entry, you must allow it to proceed at it's own, pondeorus pace.

The UN is a rather cumbersome political organ that is somewhat nefarious and even Draconian when executing it's resolutions on hapless member states, but I have come to the conclusion that I will remain a UN member until the benefits are outweighed by the downsides.

And what does that actually mean? That on certain issues you are not allowed to pick a certain option?

No, the UN votes sepperately on similiar legilations which all member nations must abide by. (ie. there could be a proposal to increase enviromental conservation, and if accepted it would increase the conservation in all member nations, whether they like it or not)

I see. So of there's a resolution to create a Declaration of Human Rights, the "civil rights" of all member states will automatically increase?
