Trade Status
Well, the Ministry of Trade is back from its holiday and files this report...
We currently have 4 freights active and 4 more in production.
Currently, we have Science set at 50% and earn discoveries every 4 turns. At 60%, that would change to /3turns.
Existing Freights -- 3 are asleep near Seville/CAPITOL -- Oil from Seville, Oil from Pamplona, and Gold from CAPITOL. The last is a Silk shipment that can be delivered to Tientsin next turn
There will be no Oil demand until we discover the Automobile. Our 2 oil freights should be used for our next WoW, or held until Auto.
The Gold shipment near CAP is demanded in Vigo (8), Cremona (5) and Naples (5) in our empire, and by the small (2) Mongol cities of Kashgar and Kerman. The minister recommends planning an excorted expedition to the Mongols. We should be able to
Freights under construction -- Two are being built in cities with no available cargo (Barcelona and Seville). It is presumed these are planned for the next WoW.
CAP's Freight can choose from Wine or Oil. Select WINE. Quick and profitable delivery to Leptis Parva is recommended. Yokahama another possibility. So is Obladi, but the payoff will be reduced significantly (same civ, same continent).
Valladolid's Freight options are Salt and Gold. Select GOLD. This should make its way to Vigo (IIRC on a different continent). No demand for Salt.

More Trade Notes
We have many cities sorely in need of trade routes. The Minister recognizes the need for some infrastructure and defense troops, but would like to remind ppl that we are going to AC and NEED AS MUCH SCIENCE AS WE CAN GET!!!
Trade is a great way to do that. And with a large and unfettered Celtic civ going to Democracy, we can expect significant competition as we near the end.
Cities Needing Trade Routes
Have none -- Need 3
Cannae (about to get 1st) -- Capua -- Cremona -- Cunaxa -- Turin
Have one -- Need 2 more
Obladi -- Naples -- whale Island -- Panama City
Have two -- Need 1 more
Bilbao -- Cordoba -- Freeport -- Grenada -- Issus -- Malaga -- Santander -- Saragossa -- Valladolid
Goods Most Demanded
WOOL -- We can supply from Obladi, Malaga, Grenada, and Vigo.
COAL -- Can supply from Capua, Issus, and Saragossa.
COPPER -- From Issus.
SILK -- Can supply from Cunaxa, Cadiz, Capua, Cremona, Issus, Leon, turin, and Valencia.
SPICE -- From Cadiz and Cremona.
GEMS -- From Avila and Leon
------------------
It's clear that future trade routes will be conentrated in our smaller, more distant cities. It is hoped that some of these cities can grow through WLTPD, perhaps with a bit of elvis encouragement, creating a more arrow-intensive environment to increase our payoffs.

are we willing to risk them over seas to a good city for payoffs? if so, i hope the people approve of ships that will at least protect us in the murky waters of the opposition, sending them blindly or with antiquated ships is just not smart

"Antiquated?"
IMHO transports are quite advanced.
We can do convoys, but remember, our convoys cause discontent.

We have cease fires with everyone but the Chinese. It should be safe to send unescorted Transports North for a while.

well the transport is easily sunk by boats.....if its not protected, and lets be honest.....the ai loves to sneak attack , so if we have to travel through tough waters....i suggest a couple of cities build escorts of the veteran variety.
it would be a shame to take 8 freights over just to lose them to a sneak attack from the ai
safety doesn't last against the ai for very long in the modern world, its like they can sense your load before you send it

For some reason I thought even the AI's had to respect a designated cease-fire for a certain number of turns (10?).

Cease-fires last 16 turns, and they tend to work early in the game. As time passes, it gets less and less dependable. At this point in the game, it would be foolhardy to expect a transport full of caravans/freights to waltz across the seas unmolested.

This is another reason why I like to have cities on each AI continent early in the game, as
a) the AI tends to focus more of it's energy on land units to attack the local (easy to get to) city without the need to build sea units, and
b) it provides a "beach head" for the Caravans to unload into before travelling across land to the other Civ's cities.

The Japanese, and Carths can be reached in only a couple of turns. That doesn't seem like too dangerous a journey, especially if we are careful to keep the forced cease-fires active.

i wouldn't stack 8 vans in one transport, we have enough transports that one could leave every third turn for the northern regions, which would probably be too fast for 8 caravans to be built, especially since some would be bound for japan/china
