For what it's worth . . .
Come to think of it, if JayBee has the dates that I gave him my scenarios, then that timeline could be established as well. The Spanish Civ2 site got my scenarios first, as soon as they were completed, every time. Unfortunately, I didn't keep track of release dates.
They are;
The Modern Age
American Empire
Mediterranean Dark Age
Age of War
Imperialism 1870

Well Stefan, Muhgals came out AFTER fall of Grenada, you mention that scenario in the game's readme.
It's a hard subject to piece together.
Phenix, I think you released Modern age in the winter or Spring of 2001, march maybe.
It's hard to get solid dates for you because I have those updated versions you sent me, and you often do a heavy playtest release before the final version of some of your stuff.
It would be nice if all creators chimed in on this thread about their work, it might help getting it sorted out.

As long as you're looking for firsts - well before MGE, multiplayer was invented by these guys:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/gjay/mpciv2.html
It was sorta kludgy, but I played a few games using their system.

If El Dorado was released in March of 99 I'm certain it was before Shannara, since I finished Shananra around June/July.
I remember Techumseh's Prince of Darkness scenario came out a month before Shannara and I paniced because Tec implemented a lot of similar in his scenario that I had for mine, I thought people would figure I was ripping from him. The only person I ripped from was Alex.
I always thought the first quest based scenario was Blackclove's Dungeon: Heroes of Beckhorn, and the first non city based scenario was X-Com.

Let me think, when did I release all of my scenarios again?
January 18th 2000, 21:15 to be precise... (my site news is good for something after all). The scenario would be "Orbis Terrae".
I made another scenario, but I think that got lost in DanQ's remember-to-make-fun-of-this-silly-person-cabinet years ago.

Here is a list with as close to dates as I can divine.
Roman Empire in Britian [mid 1997; Glyphweb only]
Flashpoint: Eurasia [late 1997]
Hapsburg Bid for Mastery [spring 1998]
Moscow: The Third Rome [fall 1998]
Great Game [early 1999]
Birth of America [fall 1999]
Great Game ToT [early 2000]
Libertad O Muerte [spring 2000]
just fragments after that....

Michael,
Where can I find your 'Roman Empire in Britain' scenario? The reason I ask is I'm half way through making a scenario on the same subject and I'd like to steal..... I mean compare tech trees.

I'm still trying to get a hold of the first scenarios known to civkind. Of course, I can also be reached via PM.
Hopefully, I can write a "survey" of the project for the next SLM issue, and then get to the fun parts.
Any ideas for a "thematic" classification of scenarios beyond:
- Quest
- War
- Empire-building
It does seem arbitrary, doesn't it?

You can add Allard's RiverWar to the list at Dec 4, 2000.

What about this classification?
- Pure-war scen (like WWII scens)
- Historic-like scens (where you simulate a age but not all is about war: Age of War, Modern Age, for example.)
- Empire building (Seeds of Greatness, for example or Kobayashi's Star Trek scens)
- Quest

It was originally posted to Glyphweb which is long gone. It was a, well, bad scenario, so there was really nothing exciting in it at all. Sorry. I'd be happy to kibitz yours, though.

I suggest you also visit the Civfanatics Civ2 Scenario Creation forums, to confer. I know they have much to contribute and are willing to do so.
Good idea, BTW. And remember Nemo and Alex!

Kibitz means to comment, sometimes complain, about a topic.

More specifically to make remarks from the side while observing others doing something. Think someone on the side watching a card game, or chess game or whatever.

Hey.
Not a problem. This is a very cool topic and I, for one would like to see more discussion. Did this ever happen? Was there an actual history of Scenario making?

I concur with Exile if someone is working this that would be great. I think it is worth the effort.
