methinks me overanalyze too much didn't mean to drive anyone off... let alone several. Does look like we room for obiwan18 now though?

Don't worry about it SCG. There are lots of games to go around. No hurt feelings on my end - and hopefully Straybow won't take my bowing out, personally

Status: 2500 - 4 cities, 7 techs, 17 of 60 beakers till Monarchy. 1 gold
We need more cities, Monarchy, and Pottery for HG.
change phalanx to settlers in Hello There.
1. 2450 Madrid builds settlers. Head South. Hut: 50 g
2. 2400
3. 2350 Barbs sighted off N. coast. This could be trouble - our defence is thin...
4. 2300 Central Beach builds Horse - maybe we will be able to defend. Fishywheat founded. RB Settlers in Seville
5. 2250 Barbs Land in North. Looks like curtains for the warrior, Hut: 50g! Warrior tries to run away
6. 2200 HelloThere builds Settlers. Disorder in Seville - not solvable. Eventually somebody will move there. warrior sees hut. Horsie kills one barb archer. The other Barbs go away from the dead meat warrior.
7. 2150 Central Beach builds warriors. Barbs disappear! Whew. Hut: First Canal. The gods are with us!
8. 2100 Monarchy => Pottery. at end of turn, Revolution.
9. 2050 gov: Monarchy. Seville in order. Phalanx in Fishywheat
10. 2000 Cup of Sugar? founded in ICS spot near Hello There. Seville Helper founded on plains.
11. 1950 Seville Helper in disorder, again unsolvable without external help.
12. 1900
13. 1850 Hut: Currency. warrior from Seville to Seville Helper
14. 1800 pop: 200,000
15. 1750* Pottery=>Trade. Get those Gardens!
8 cities. 10 techs. Monarchy. 16 of 112 beakers for Trade.

good news bad news
looks like a nice continuation based on the log only one small problem
unless someone knows a way to load and play an MGE game in 2.42, I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out of the game now
I spent several hrs going around town and found countless stores with Civ II v 2.42, CtP II, Civ III (solo and PTW). Many had SMAC, a few had ToT, and I even found one with CtP I. However, none had the multiplayer gold version

SCG,
You may want to check out the thread at http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...hreadid=68357.
Or just go to e-bay. It seems to be readily available there. The ebay link in the above thread is still good, so there are lots of possibilities on auction, many for new, unopened games.
Hope this helps,
Monk

Grigor ... do you have 2.42? If you do - a replay is the best solution.

and if you don't, don't worry about it too much, a couple other 2.42 games I read about got switched to MGE, so i was expecting the possibility of it. I was just hoping it wouldn't be the 2nd posted save game Thats the main reason I spent 4 hrs running around town ( before you posted your game), just in case.
Looking on the EBay links, there are 2 games out there, but bidding doesn't end for a few more days, and i'm not sure i'd want to spend as much as it's probably going to go for (one started at 0.49 and is up to $12 + $5 s/h with 2 days of bidding left). In any case, i'd be looking at possibly a couple weeks or more via that route.
As for that image, I had just figured out how to get images to appear directly in the post (see here and was having fun adding them in

SCG - I think we better let Straybow determine which version we play in as the majority of recent Succession Games have been played in MPE.

Uh - I have 2.42, I thought. I certainly do not have multiplayer. I looked up in the About Civ II and I got all the credits but no further info. It is a Mac version, but that should be no problem, right????
So, I used the browse button on the reply screen and saved it from my disc. Is there another way?
Please help.

didn't work again, although i know it can be done We just need to find out what patch or group of settings needs to be used. I'm doing a quick scan of the really old strategy forum posts, although i think it was a problem raised inside another thread so don't know if i'll see it on the first pass

There's your answer. Mac version is MGE-compatible only. Ask Jrabbit... he's in the same situation.
I don't know what you can do about the turns you just played - you can load 2.42 into MGE, but obviously not the other way around, as JCG has shown. If play continues from your save it has to be MGE. Straybow should be the one to make the call on that.
You're welcome to join the game I started (Hard Times Succession Game), which is MGE. If you do, please post before playing, so that we know you're 'in', and nobody else winds up playing the same turns as you.
And let me know if you can't download MGE saves in Mac... for some reason when our other Mac user (Jrabbit) downloads, they have to be zipped

On second thought...
OK, I downloaded your second save, Grigor, and it won't run on 2.42 or MGE. Or FW. Or Test of Time. The first won't run on 2.42 or MGE.
Colour me puzzled. Perhaps if Jrabbit is around he might have some suggestions - or any other Mac users? You might want to try uploading the file 'zipped' with WinZip or any other common .zip utility.
edit: typo corrected, and added zip suggestion.

the first two links here look promising. Might be another one out there that doesn't have MGE in its name that would be simpler?

You might also ask smash. He has A LOT of practice, both on Mac and PC (use the 'search' function to find him).

Yes, Smash would know... Jrabbit went through the same process which is why I thought of him, but IIRC he's away this weekend.

AFAIK the only Mac version of Civ2 is MGE.
2.42 is convertible to MGE (Mac or PC), but once converted is not backwards compatible back to 2.42 -- again, AFAIK.
It could be that the problematic save is Mac MGE without the current patch (1.1 IIRC). Surmising only...
My basic technique is to DL the save file to my work PC, ZIP it (Win Zip), email to my home comp (iMac, OS 9.2) and unzip with a "zip for Mac" utility called ZipIt (one month trial, then $15 or 20 shareware fee -- well worth it!)
To go straight from Poly to the iMac requires the file to be zipped.
Don't know if that sheds any light...
(Oh, and don't forget that there's a Mac forum on Poly. Might be worth searching there for more info. But Smash is indeed the go2 guy for succession-on-Mac questions.)
As for this game, the Lagomorphic One is joining Hydey as a member of the lurker patrol.

No, I really have Civ II Mac, not MGE. The credits say 1996. I cannot download MGE games. I also do not have any zip functions on this machine.
There is no problems accessing my saves by email at civfanatics, so perhaps I could try that.

SGC - Sorry, I misspoke - I have various stuffit utilities. But I can't figure out how to get them to unstuff zipped game files.
Sometimes in order to successfully load a downloaded game I have to rename the file to correspond to the appropriate suffix for my machine. You might try that...
Does the Apolyton Browse function automatically compress files? I did not compress them myself.
I have also pposted in the Civ2 Mac forum. We'll see who comes around.

at least on the PC side, i've not seen any autocompressed files that weren't loaded already compressed. just to check, no, i can't unzip the file, even if renamed.

well, i had already done that with a prev download (windows doesn't care how long it is), but tried again and got same error
i did try extracting JRabbit's first save in the no trade, no problem game (small enough that it probably is a zip file) and wasn't able to extract anything from it , and of course couldn't load it either...

I have used an editor to examine the latest of Grigor's saves - it is not a compressed file - and fails to load in 2.42 & MGE -- anyone tried ToT or CtP?
Will now backtrack and see if I can get any joy from the earlier ones...

OK - I join the general club - SCG your save is fine 2.42 -- cannot read any of Grigor's - they all appear essentially identical - ie not compressed, but not valid saves for PC 2.42 or MGE
SG[1]
Edit] to remove some gibberish I wrote as a consequence of being unable to read...

So where do we stand? Should I play SCG's save, wait for SG[1] to play, or wait for Grigor's save to be straightened out? Or, perhaps, just wander off mumbling with no backwards glances?

I tried ToT, FW... no go. Besides, Grigor'd know if it was ToT. He says it's 2.42. Me confused
