A mix of both. In fact, playing as Oda I built every unit except cavalry archers for some reason. I think by the time I got round to thinking about building them they were much less useful than either Yari cavalry or heavy cavalry.
Regarding the 'death' techs - its a brilliant idea but I still couldn't acquire the death techs for several level III units, despite killing the required enemies. Some bug in mge events language, maybe?

Yeah thats MGE's problem... the anybody flag only works once, so you have to be the first to kill a level 2 unit if you want the corresponding level 3 tech. I ran out of events space before I could cure this problem... I was able to marginally fix the level 2 problem (it'll still happen if you try to go after the same clan somebody else has already aquired the tech from).

I build almost exclusivley Cav. Archers and Sam. Archers, they are much more effective in my mauradering army of death style. I hate long drawn out sieges...

I'm thinking about increasing the cost of samurai archers to 40 shields...

Now if techs took longer to research, it would make more sense to "specialize" i.e. either go for the mounted archers, Yari Cavalry or hevalry (especially if the later cannot be found early in the game)...
I have still to see the legendary Geisha or the Cannon (perhaps this will work out in MP)
Increasing the cost of the archer will give more incentive to build the Yari Samurai.

Whooowww !
I happen to be a fan of 16th century Japan !
I just dloaded the scen and took some turns, and really it's impressive ! Thoroughly researched and modded, great !
I tried another "Feudal Japan" scen, which was quite disappointing (it was only a "qucik port", with Manhattan project still in the tech tree... )
Just one quibble : shouldn't the entire map be visible at start to all ? I mean, japanese warlords weren't searching in the dark for their enemies and the capital ...

I'm not a fan of visible maps, takes the discovery aspect out of civilization. I'm glad you like my scenario though

I know this post is quite late, and I don't even know if your still reading this thread (I hope you have e-mail notification), but are you supposed to be able to trade "Blank" Death technologies. It may just be my style of scenario-building, but they sound like unique unit obsolescence techs. Are they, as I don't recall what they otherwise do (though I probably should check the Civilopedia).

Sorry for not being clear, but I meant "Blank" as a catch-all for any given unit tech, such as Yari Samurai 1 Death, for instance. My wording was obviously not evocative of what I meant.

You shouldn't be able to trade the death technologies.
