How Come My City Just Got Mind Controlled?
I'm the Angels, with a probe rating of +4 and Covert Ops centres, yet the AI Drones just managed to conquer my city with a regular (elite) probe team... what's going on there? I thought it was the first example I've seen of blatant AI cheating at first, but I went into Scenario editor to switch to the Drones and then try to conquer the Angel city, and it let me.
Hmm?

It's the probe rollover bug. A probe rating of +4 the games interprets as a flat zero (or was it even -3?). So as the angels I really recommend to go Knowledge once you have free covert ops centres. Otherwise you lose your +2 probe benefit.
In MP games I believe it is agreed upon you may not infiltrate, steal techs etcetera once the angels have a +4 probe rating, even though the game allows it.

That's a rather well-known bug. PROBE ratings of greater than +3 roll over...not sure to what, exactly, but to a value that fails to meet the 'mini Hunter' threshold.
EDIT: X-posted.

Wow, that's dumb. Thanks for the info though, I was so outraged that I was considering not playing that game any more.
...can someone link me to a link of the most serious bugs in the game? I keep encountering these things, making thread about them, and getting really good answers. Which scares me.

Its probably one of the worst and most blatant bugs in the game
I seem to recall a super-detailed bug list was compiled . . . I will see if i can find it

one idea is to change the faction bonus to +1 instead of +2

In that case you suffer one of the worst bugs in the game - Golden Age doesn't give +2 Growth.

That isn't quite accurate, Kirov. GA does indeed give +2 GROWTH in SMAC, up to a maximum of +5 in any base. The Bug is that the GA GROWTH bonus is not counted when determining if a Pop Boom has been triggered.

The bug that I think is the funniest is when you upgrade air units to Fusion Power.
It's happened twice that I'll upgrade Fission reactor jets to Fusion, but sometimes I'll do it in the middle of my turn using the Unit Design Workshop (this does not use up the units' turns, so it's pretty useful for mid-battle upgrades).
The problem occurs when you have already moved some units to the limit of their moves. If you then upgrade them to fusion, they gain 2 more movement squares, but no extra movement turns. So whatever units you leave out there have 2 more moves to get back to a base or crash and burn!
"Haha! FEAR my awesome Fusion needlejets which... have... just... erm... crashed into the sea... ... shit."

Heh, that happened to me in my current game. Since I'd just spent the time to design and upgrade my units I didn't bother to re-load... for once.

That'll teach 'em to replace engines in mid-flight!

Yes, I'm pretty much aware of the GA bug... Too bad that Firaxis will never release another patch to fix that...

Unfortunately I realised there was no way for me to get my probe rating at +3, so I had to give up on the game. Boo!
