Recommend Violin Music
Anyone know of any particular bands or groups that use primarily violins or electric violins? I'm looking for the more powerful breed of this kind of music, not the high pitched squeely fancy expensive restaraunt violin songs.

Any suggestions?

Ashley MacIsaac uses a violin/fiddle...you may like it and you may hate it.

He's a weird guy.

One of my friends, who's played Violin and Fiddle for literally 10 years now, says MacIsaac's stuff is great.

But does he get up on stage, curse out the audience, then promptly leave after a 5 minute performance?

Forget all dat ****. Just fire up KaZaA and look for "Brahms violin concerto" There should be one of Itzhak Perlman and the Chicago Symphony. Movement III. It's da bomb.

Word.

Oh, and if you download this, don't be surprised by the similarity to a certain famous Andrew Lloyd-Webber tune. Yes, he stole it.

The Bartok Concerto No. 2 is particularly fine. Kyung-Wha Chung with the CBSO under Rattle is a wonderful recording.

Joshua Bell is indeed a fine musician. Another gem is Hilary Hahn, whom I saw play Mozart in TO a couple of years back. She has a really good recording of the Barber Concerto out.

And the Schneiderhan recording of the Beethoven Concerto still can't be beat IMHO, and DG are offering it cheaply as one of their "Legendary recordings" (about 10 bucks).

And if you want Bach on the violin, Frogger, go no further than the Grumiaux recordings of the Concerti on Phillips.

Rasputina is about as far away from "high pitched squeely fancy expensive restaraunt violin songs" as you can get.

The only pop song I know that uses a violin specifically (rather than, say, an electric Viola, a country fiddle, or grouped "Strings") is the original version of "The Tide is High" by The Paragons. However, I believe that would fall into your "weedy restaurant music" category, meven though the rest of the song isn't particularly.

I'm not too familiar with violin music, but I got a tape with some Nigel Kennedy performances which are pretty good.
Let's see:
Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D, and Bach's Encores from E major Partita & C major Sonata (I'm sure that means more to some of you and to me)...

Some other violin music, try dEUS, and alternative rock band you must've heard of. I don't think they always use a violin... well, "Suds & Soda" is a great song.

These are widely regarded among classical music aficionados as weird and idiosyncratic performances. I happen to like them, but I doubt it's what the B man had in mind. Mind you they aren't as bad as Glenn Gould's version of the Emperor Concerto.

If you want a good version of the Beethoven the aforementioned Schneiderhan is excellent as is the Perlman recording (EMI)

If you're interested in older music, The Moody Blues used full orchestras in their compositions. They once produced an album with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Or if you want something Celtic, check some tunes by the Chieftains.

But ya know what, I think that's great. One thing I can't stand about modern conductors is their rigidity and the idea that interpretation is limited to different tempos. I ache for the days when we had conductors like Toscanini, Furtwangler and Stokovski. Each performance for them had elements of whimsy, they lived in the artistic moment and they weren't afraid to take liberties with the music itself to add to the excitement of the works and keep them fresh. To me, that's what the art of music should be about.

Likewise, I get bored with soloists who just stick to the script. If I wanted to hear the same version of the Emperor Concerto, I would buy one recording and never listen to anything else. How dull is that?!

Of course, at last count I had 14 different recordings of the Brahms 4th symphony...

Any idiot can play or conduct with precision. It takes a willingness to be daring and original to be a true artist.
