Help!
I've played CTP2 since the beginning and it is the best game i've ever played especially the multiplayer part.
The problem is that mp-games are very instable and they are even more instable with the official patch.
Example:
I am asking the AI to make war to the other human players.
The game always crashes after this request.
Sometimes we can't even play 10 turns in a mp-game without crashing even with the official patch.
Can anyone help me?!?

How many players?

LAN
most of the time: 2 human players
maximum AI players
most games: gigantic map (sometimes medium)
difficulty: Impossible, marauders
we use windows 98, xp and me.
more examples:
Sometimes one human player isn't even able to join the game. ( I am joining the game for ever and ever, but I never actually join the game).
In a battle I lost all but one infantryman. After the resynchronising (two turns later), it turns out that I have 3 infantryman instead of one.
When a human player has a science pact with a AI-player, he can get all the advances from the AI-player for free.
It takes the fun out of the game.

There has been some talk that winXP is a bad OS for playing CtP2MP, various bugs have been spotted with always showing the asian city style for the non-host player and sometimes not even able to join a game, whether the winXP player is host or non-host.
The science pact is buggy, dont get a science pact with the AI. As far as the city size thing goes i dont know, i usually get the Gaia Controller or conquer all humans well before that. If you get cities so big maybe you need more commerce tile improvements, usually +1000 growth is good enough for any city.
The problem you experienced with the infantrymen reappearing is when a resynch occurs particularly after a battle the battle will play out again, and so a different result may happen, sometimes you may capture a city, it resynchs and you lost the city and a whole stack of units, thats a real *****.

Thanks for your help.
As for the city size, my games are usually finished well before the size gets this big, but this time I wanted my cities to grow to get the maximum score per city.
As soon as a city has a size of 60, the growth is 0. As if the city needs another improvement to allow further growth.
The problem is: there is no such improvent.
the other problems:
Should I get win98 instead of winxp?
Should I stop having pacts with the AI altogether?

well apart from the Xp problem already dealt with, i would add that if when you say 'maximum AI players', in a game with 2 human players; you mean over 5 AI players - this has caused me problems before in LAN games.
I play using a Modded game and this setup would give me problems if the total combined number of Human players and chosen AI opponents came to 8. So i learned to choose one less AI(so total players 7 maximum: 2 human/1-5 AI). In fact i seem to remember that 1-4 AI helped most to stabalise some MP problems.
Now i'm not sure if the exact problem you had was one i would get(it's been a while!), but it sounds like the same kinda thing? LAN can be the best way to play CTP2, but also the most frustrating sometimes!

Well if you have the option to use win98 or winXP use win98, this would help troubleshoot the problems better.
You can have any other pact but dont get a science pact, i even heard someone say when you have a science pact the AI gets a free advance every turn! So maybe just get an alliance at most, and then exchange or buy techs from the AI.

Getting cities to be able to grow past size 60 requires editing several files... There was a thread on the subject somewhere, but I can't find it now.

You could read the question number 34 of our CTP2 FAQ or click here.

One thing you might want to check as well, if the max. number of civ's is the same in the rules.txt (?/or was it another one) is the same. Might have some influence.
Haven't tested it myself, as no time......
