DH,

SMAC is a dead ringer for Herbert's The Jesus Incident. It has fungus, mindworms, Lab One, a demented (unethical) head scientist, an ecologically sensitive faction, and a merging with a sentient planet. There might even be copyright problems...

P.S. If you want a look into the minds of the SMAC designers, go to the Appendix 5 Fiction section of the SMAC guide. Lots of good stuff there. You'll see The Jesus Incident listed first, and given credit as the "clear inspiration for the story of Planet."
