Under the old software, free email accounts weren't excepted. But once they switched over, those types of accounts are now allowed. It seems like a third of the new members come in on hotmail or yahoo email accounts.

Please resist... I liked that "old" feature. Now, it's way to easy to create a DL. sigh...

Yes, it is the norm these days.......although Ming's point is undoubtedly valid, if you stop allowing users with free email accounts from registering that would stop a lot of genuine new 'Polytoners.

yeah I tried to change my address to my yahoo account (since my original was an aol account ). I ended up having to use my cable modem e-mail account. I usually don't like using that one to register to bb's and stuff. Don't want to risk getting spam.

I hope so because all I use is a hotmail account.

is it better to have 27'000 users of which 33% never even post once and another 33% are fake, DL or are gone for years.
or is it better to "just" have 10-15k, but say, that these are regular posters...?
quality or quantity?

'Poly has a huge number of active posters. It is probably true that that stat should be kept track of as well as the total registered users stat, because IMO knowledge about active posters is more interesting.

Ey! I use hotmail account and am not a DL. (I've already spa--posted up my post count enough so that I'd be a DL of someone really dedicated (like Markos ).
Alas, we do have many DLs (probably between 10-25%, definately not 33%) and many many many inactive accounts (somewhere around 75% or more).
BTW, the Markos reference comes from the theory:
a) Ming is Markos's double personality (i.e. he's schizophrenic.)
b) Everyone is either Markos's DL or Ming's DL.
c) Markos (and Ming?) do this to push up ad revenue ("Hey! We've 27000 members!")
(btw, no offense if someone _is_ schizophrenic )
I've got the feeling I'm not spelling schizophrenic right...well, I'm talking about it as in you've got an alter personality that you sometimes use without even knowing it i.e. one day you're MarkG and the next day you're Ming and you consider yourself two entirely different entities (or don't know of the other at all.)
(please dont ban me for poking fun at you

That is one thing they won't do. They are pretty good at taking shots, and returning them on occasion.
 ACK!

^^Yeah, although they might give you a "snazzy" personal title or something. Just ask AH.

Come on Eli. They won't ban you if you tell the truth.

Well, at least I was guessing a lower range for DLs than everyone else

Markos: What portion of the accounts haven't been logged in for over two years? I'm betting it is a significant amount.
