i don't mind unit bribes, my early exploring units always get killed off before writing, usually by unfriendly ferrets

"unfriendly ferrets"
Have you ever seen any Friendly ones?
You allude to the best reason to allow unit bribes. Early in the game when your opponent's pesky warrior or horse is wandering around in your territory (staying on mountains or hills) unless you can use units to sucker him into a trap or pin him, the only effective way to take him out from mapping your area is to bribe him.

When I send the early explorers out, I expect to lose them eventually. One way or another... opening huts, finding another civ's unit with no movement points left, ending up next to a city... It's not a matter of If, just when. So I really don't consider it a big loss when one gets bribed. At least it cost the other civ some money

have to agree with ming there, though it sucks to lose that vet archer to one of berz's top hat transvestites
i notice the republic players use more dips to bribe then the monarchy ones do
i don't do alot of unit bribing myself, but i will if action needs to happen

They have too... they usually don't have many military since they cost shields to maintain And after they bribe your unit, they will bring it back to a city and turn it into shields toward another caravan

Good idea.
I like the Berz bashing going on here, since he is a great briber and I have been victimized a few times by him.
I like the 2x1 games, but also like playing 1x1 WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE.
Taking over the world by horseback (Or getting overrun by horseback ) is somewhat tiresome. But at the same time, it's the best thing going.

I bribe whenever it's the best alternative. Sometimes it's easier to kill the unit and save the money... and sometimes it's just easier to bribe the sucker... it really all depends on the situation.

I like to bribe an AI's unit near his city just to watch the impendng commotion of its little AI brain trying to cope with this sudden new threat - then paint their city walls red with my newfound friend's blood. A little spendy for cheap thrills, but hey why not.
Hey what's up with non-diplomat units bribing my guys? I had a babylonian explorer trapped in a dead zone between three cities who just pranced around on mountaintops for a few decades until I was sending a rifleman through.. and the little bugger bribed him! I killed the explorer, and it only said one unit destroyed, so there wasn't a dip hiding in his little balloon pants.. it's happened at borders, too, but I've never been absolutely certain about it.. I mean, I trust the AI's y'know, now that's ruined, I'm gonna have to become one of those warmongering hatefilled "Bush crime sydicate" types now. Oh innocense lost... isn't it sad.

the ai has been known to bribe your units with units other than dips..very annoying
Ming i know why republic players do it....if they were smart they would keep the archer and disband the warrior thats what i do with my warrior defence when i get a replacement hahahhaha

Yes, I would too, but real early in the game (pre monarchy), there are people that feel it's better to bring home any near archers that you get from a hut to disband to speed up a settler production to get those first few settlers out quicker. (I believe Eyes said that once and a few people agreed with him, so unless all the people that agreed with him were DL's, he wasn't alone)
If I get a off the path tech from a hut so I don't get to research (horse or bronze) before monarchy, I usually really appreciate having that archer around 3250 bc.
If I have bronze already or am researching it, I will consider whether it makes sense to disband one to speed up the settler production. But in our early meet oponent games, I usually like to keep him around.

I wonder if this is because no one realises what a huge cheat it is?
I can't believe you'd allow it.
I'd be really annoyed if I found out this was being used in games I play. A lot of people think pre-working with settlers is simply irrigating an area before building a city but the Rah Rules definition is flagrant cheating in my books.

rah i remember people making claims and i agree in the right circumstances that it might be smart, but those are also the same people who ***** when that chariot shows up two turns later

Whoa - I never knew that working the land before building a city was a cheat.. I thought it was common sense! Is it bad because you can't irrigate or anything after the city is there? Oh blah - you've obviously been over this.. guess I should check out those Rah Rules sometime!

One might argue whether pre working settlers is really a cheat. Some have argued that it was a built in feature to allow settlers to discontinue what they are doing to avoid death from a barb or another player, and then go back and continue it. It was even brought to the programmers attention many times and was never changed in any of the patches...
But that's why our group POSTS the rules, so people can know in advance. Unlike some groups, where they end up arguing all the time about the rules

yet another reason why this group is fun to play with, everything is known up front, so if you get your a$$ kicked, you have noone to blame but yourself
