I've got Crusader. Can't say I was too enthused with it (i.e., other games are better).

The two things that really annoyed me about the game were: walls are built instantly; and the new 'mercenary' units are unbalancing.

Stronghold is a great game I haven't played it in a long time though.

But the Crusaders expansion pack was terrible.

Stronghold has a largeish MP following......I was going to check it out a while back but I got sidetracked. Since the XP got panned I doubt I will now.

what do you mean?

Yeah it's the siege game, not the dwarf thing...
Well about the walls being built instantly, it's pretty obvious, since all buildings are built instantly, thing is, gathering resources take more time, and if all those walls had to be built, it would take a very long time, as you really need to build a few lines of walls for defense!

also the concept of the game is that you can't control your workers..

I don't know much about the crusader thing though.. except that it should be an expansion pack...

I meant IIRC the XP wasn't well received in the MP community.

I was really hoping for a modern version of the old Castles games where castle building was more accurately modelled. The sight of macemen beating down 40' high walls instead of needing ladders and catapults just turns me off. Why bother including castles if they're just going to be the scenery to another generic RTS? Then there were the fire arrows - or should I call them fireball arrows because they have no basis in reality whatsoever. I hit the uninstall button pretty fast.

There is an option in the 1.2 patch to turn on realistic walls (so only sige weapons can destroy walls)

also, the fire arrows are quite accurate... you think in the history of man, nobody has ever thought of firing arrows that are on fire? wooden structures such as rams etc start to burn, which is handy..

I do agree that the game could be improved though, too bad crusader didn't live up to that expectation!

What put me off was my archers advancing on the castle only to be turned into human torches by these insane arrows and then setting their neighbours aflame. Sure they are good at attempting to set light to dry unprotected siege equipment and houses. They're not significantly better at killing protected equipment or human opponents. Its a bit of flaming pitch, not napalm or a molotov cocktail on a stick.

Huh?

Fire arrows didn't do anything except light pitch on fire, as far as I know. They certainly didn't set flame to anything by themselves.
