Man tries to beat dog; shoots self instead
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...-gun24-ON.html
Quote:
|
WINCHESTER, Va. - A man trying to beat his dog to death with a gun was fatally wounded when it apparently went off accidentally, police said.
Raymond Poore Jr., 43, called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill the animal, police Capt. David Sobonya said.
The wife came home about 6 p.m. and found her husband unconscious, with a number of dog bites and scratches. Emergency medical personnel discovered that Poole had been shot. He was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.
Sobonya said Poore must have beaten the 30-pound shar-pei with the gun that went off. He said the stock of the weapon, a combination rifle and shotgun, was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.
The dog was in the custody of an animal control officer. Sobonya had no detail on how badly it was injured.

I remember hearing this story elsewhere, it mentioned that the dog had put to death by Animal Control.

Reminds me of the turkey hunter who was shot in the leg by a dead turkey.

At some point, I grant animals the right to "self-defense" even against humans.
I tend to be a "top of the food chain" type of person, but there are limits. No one ever has the right to torture animals to no purpose. And I'm getting to the point of no one has the right to injure animals for non-food reasons rather quickly.

cavebear-I love animals too, and I used to have the same opinion, but I changed my mind. Animals have no conscience. They just do everything by instinct. I don't like to see a dog tortured though, because there's a possibility they might be conscience of themselves. For example, they have dreams.

Aren't you contradicting yourself here?
Anyways, I'm sure my cat is self-conscience. It knows when it is happy or unhappy.

Perhaps this dog was very vicious and the owner realized it needed to be put down. That would seem to make sense, since animal control destroyed it. Granted he should have gone through the proper channels, but I'm not so quick to characterize this as evil human vs. noble dog.

I don't care how evil the dog was... you don't attempt to kill a dog by clubbing it to death. That's just brutal and wrong! There are faster and less painful ways to put a dog down.

Would you consider characterizing it as stupid human v dog considering the fact that he was clubing the dog with a loaded gun (Why not shoot it?)?

This is a great argument against gun control .

also am I missing something here?
Wouldn't it have been more humane and easier just to shoot the dog since the gun obviously had ammo in it.
Also not all animals act on instinct. Certain primate species have been proven to exhibit some signs of "culture". Source: Discover magazine.

I am not sure what you are trying to say.
Suppose dogs aren't sentient. That still doesn't make torturing them right.

yes, dogs still feel fear, and panic.
You don't want to know what happened to that dog the Soviet Union put into space. They say he either died from panic, heat, or dehydration. Probably a combination of the 3.

Winchester is not far from here, so the story made the front page of the local newspaper. You just have to wonder what he was thinking. If he only meant to beat the dog surely there were o0ther blunt objects available. He must have considered shooting the dog, then relented. Fickle, fickle, fickle.

I think I recall reading that the dog was put down by Animal Control officers because it was already badly injured. At least that a**hole died as well.

I am very sad for the dead man, but I think he was very bad if he wanted to kill a dog, just because it bit him. Even if there is a history of a violent animal, there are ways to deal with that so that no humans or animals will suffer in the proccess, like putting him to sleep, or sending him to a trainer, so he would be reintegrated into the family.
using dogs and cats for experiments is bad as well. They have no rights, but humans shared their lives with dogs since ancient times, and inflicting pain on them hardens the human soul and makes it colder to the suffering of the other, be it man, or dog. besides, Dogs are much more useful as pets, making humans happy. (and being happy by themselves, which shouldn't be a moral goal of humanity, but a great side-effect as well )
If I have kids, I will certainly buy them a dog.

Regardless of whether an animal is self-aware, it still feels pain. And even if it deserved to die for some reason, it's no kindness to kill it slowly...
