Unless you are one of those strange people who wants to watch movies on you 19 inch computer moniter instead of the 36 inch TV, I can't imagine why anyone would bother.

Kaak, there is no standard yet. I strongly recommend you wait a couple more years until there is a clear standard, and even then, from reading PC Mag about this issue, neither standard is as full proof as CDR/CDRW drives.
Sit tight, I remember having this discussion with one of my friends when CDRWs first came out. He didn't listen to me, and wasted $500 on a drive that can only read the CDRWs that it makes.

I would STRONGLY advise anyone who hasn't already purchased one or the other NOT to do so because neither format has been fully accepted by the industry commitee setup to standardize the format. I don't know the full background story, but the commitee has several of the major players in the industry represented and I believe a few left to make their own format(s), basically telling the others to sod off. The only people being screwed over by this bickering are the consumers. Until a single format is accepted and adhered too (or drives/players are made that recognize/write both formats are mad), you really shouldn't waste your money.

Sony has a new drive that burns both DVD-R and DVD+R for about $400 if you can find it. http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=154
I just heard that they have a faster one on the way.
