Or just start a typical MP direct IP game and choose double production... then start the game with only you in it. I do it all the time if I want to test something for MP.

I'm with SG, for SP there is no good reason to play double production. For MP training though it could be useful.

Could be right, haven't tried a hot seat game in a year or so As long as Mercator's way works.

Aha, the cat is out of the bag.
Admit to having Mercator as a DL, and Cedric as an accomplice.

Yes, I highly highly recommend to anybody that going to make the leap into MP and play with people that prefer 2x production, to practice a few times first. City location must be thoroughly thought through for MP and then considerations for 2x. AND practice just to see how the software responds. (i.e. sqaure selection when pop increases in the city screen is even worse than in 1x).

Also, if you play MP with barbs, you should practice beforehand so you know exactly what to expect from them, and what you can get away with. This is not something you want to experiment with in an actual game.

Actually, the diety level AI does a heluva lot better on 2x production than normal. If you could give the ai 2x while only having 1x for the player it might be somewhat interesting.Sorta like the diety+ levels.

Except for the algorithm for selecting which city squares to work. The algorithm does not fully take into account that it's 2x and selects squares like it was 1x which can really make you scratch your head (or just laugh) when you see what it's done.

Well, you can always edit terrain values in rules.txt, and then the ai would know what it was looking at. Hmmm, or maybe not if the ai has its own way of evaluating terrain values...

I think the AI compares what is available with its simple rules, and chooses a square. Since the rules are made for 1x, it is even worse at 2x.

Smash's idea is great, is there anyways to tweak the rules so the ai gets x2 and the human gets x1?

Yes it's called Deity. With the AI's reduced production box, food box, and less beakers required for each tech, it is quite close to half what the the human player needs, which translates to pretty much the same as 2x.

wouldn't that be similar to that Diety +5 that was used for some of the OCC games about a year ago? Seems like someone figured out that that was the highest AI level that could be produced by fiddling with the rules.txt - not sure what the overall, as the AI is 1:1 at diety -2 (King) and about 1.6:1 at diety...

Its been know for a long time that the AI can bribe with just about any unit, not just a diplo/spy. If i can find a thread on it, i may link it later... somewhere we have a thread on a list of AI 'cheats', probably in the strategy forum from a couple years ago
