I find it amazing that you can find so many people on only two sites because of one game
So long...

Only two sites? Don't forget CGN, Gamecatcher and All Civ. They have an audience too.

Comparison...
I did this just for fun.
ACS
Civ
Civ II
Civ II ToT
Civ III
SMAC
Civ:CtP
CtP2
RoN
MoO2
MoO3
Colonization
MoM
Dinosaurs
Clash of Civilizations
Freeciv
Stella Polaris
Galactic Civilizations
Courts of Candle'Bre
Civ: The Boardgame
EU
EU2
Other alternative Civ games (sidenote: the section covers all alternative games)
CFC
Civ
Civ II
Civ III
RoN
SMAC
Colonization
"CtP series"
CGN
Civ III
SMAC
Ones in bold have an actual coverage, while the rest are covered by more or less dead/active forums.
Conclusion: ACS has more coverages and more forum coverages, despite CFC might have more depth in its Civ II and Civ III coverages.

Yes, but CFC has a lower tolerance for trolls. I can see why that might lead to more productive, and hence more frequented forums for the games they cover.
I do not disagree with Dan's and Mark's ideas for how to run a site. However, I acknowledge that many of the players of games do not want to wade through the sh!t that splatters some of the forums on Poly.

Well, indeed, they seem to have a larger and also more controlled group of moderators, so I assume that's directly linked to the quality.
However...
Apolyton
It's so homy and cuddly,
you might even think of it as home,
while you stroll around,
the halls of the OTF,
looking for threads to spam.
Under the surveilance of Ming,
we spam crap to get Deity,
as we all want to be that,
despite we know,
it's not what we want.
My home away from home,
that is Apolyton.
I'm bad at any poetry, but count it as bad modern English poetry by me.

Back on topic, titles are just kind of like iceing while the content of your message is the cake.

MarkG, how many registered users have used Poly in the past one, three, six months?
It seems silly to use registered members as yardstick when more than half of those people registered over a year ago, and about 80% haven't been here for months.

Indeed, it's a very high ratio. It would be nice to compare the figures to the ones of CFC and CGN.

CGN has less than 500 users, 40 of which registered since the beginning of December.
There's no comparison, and there shouldn't be. They are different types of entity.

I assume it's Lefty then, but of course a scout could ask it in their community forum.

Yes one game! The whole idea behind this site and CFC and countless others is Civ. Everything else slowly evolved, I am not trying to downplay the significance of the others which have added quite a bit to the site!
@Ras, I was just saying that there are >50k in just two sites... (as an admiration to the fact)
So long...

Exactly. I'm registered on ACS, CFC, CGN, Gamecatcher and All Civ, but I have only posts at ACS, CFC and CGN, plus 99,9% of all my posts are at Poly.

hrm, hrm, a quick word on the infamous 'newbie patrol':
I am the one Willem is talking about in the first place.
- I created the newbie questions thread, got mod approval and got it 'stickied' and at the beginning I was the one who gave most of the answers. Meanwhile, things have changed and a LOT of experienced players do the 'helping along'.
- I re-did the FAQ thread (and continue to update it and keep it in shape and up to date). Many posters have taken to pointing interesting and helpfull stuff out to me; even TF PMs me once he sees something worth ading. That way, the entire Civ3 community at CFC contributes effectively to the FAQ
- both these things were done to help newbies and people with questions
- I hope it is understandable that I (and all others) do NOT want to spend their time re-checking and re-typing stuff that HAS BEEN PAINFULLY COLLECTED AND ORGANIZED before.
- None of us minds newcomers who are overwhelmed by the sheer size of CFC and post 'noob threads'. We do mind people who know better, but are too lazy to care.
- A mod became involved because I was fed up with people calling others names just because they directed newbies to the best and fastest source of info that I closed the FAQ and asked TF to make a statement on the sites policy. I did this to avoid having posters get into a flamewr that only hurts CFC and all its posters. Noone got told off for directing a newbie to info by a mod - ever!
- no newbie got told off for asking by anyone, ever!
- even people who really should have known better were never treated impolitely as far as I have seen. The tone might get a bit less then heartily friendly when someone posts 13(!) noob threads within 2 hours, but even then people were told: 'Check the FAQ thread' - is that so bad?
so please everyone, we are neither here nor at CFC to start bashing the other place.
Quit it!
even Willem and I have come to terms after a 'noob thread guideline' was posted.
