I just saw this text in another thread:
Is it so that us settlers are beeing discriminated because we are just low ranked civ players and don`t know anything about civ tactics. Are our posts taken less seriously?
I have been playing civ since it was realeased for the Amiga computers and I demand respect for my Sid Meier worshiping.

hi ,
that particular post in question was nothing more then a stupid personal attack , .....
and that line you took from it has nothing to do with it , and on top of that its some BS , thats all it is (!)
your rank has nothing to do with who you are , but like always in the real world there are some people who thing "rank" is everythink , however most people on apolyton dont bother to minimize others or insult them , ........
have a nice day
P.S. welcome to the club

Anyone saying "noob" immediately sounds really dumb.

The prefered word by nerds is "n00b" (e.g. N00bz rule Poly!), if you want to be geeky.

Thankfully, instances of h3X0r at Apolyton are rare.

But spike, we have had real hackers (Almost as many hackers as our 3 or 4 old 1337ers )
Snapcase for one
RainbowJDS for another...
And I think the 2012 Problem was involved in hacking in some way, although I can't be certain.
As far as I know, that's all

It isn't.....it's bloody annoying, but it is very popular amongst some geeky subsection of computer users. So I wouldn't bother doing it unless you want to look like one.

Back in the day, the 'net was moderated by evil net admins, and the hackers would have to get around the admin censors by making their text not exactly plain text. Words like "SEX" would set off admin alarms. Spelt like $3x, and this would go silently past all censors.
With the rise of free decent encryption, the need for 133t speak has gone, but in an effort to be like the "cool" hackers the script kiddies have picked up the lingo in an effort to make themselves look cool. They have yet to realise that 133t is out of fashion.

And I thought the sign of being a real geek was knowing how to read and write l33t script, but refraining from doing so. That's how to be really cool. HA! real geeks know how to make words in their posts bigger or much smaller

Wasn't it Doom that revived it all. Hackers wanted to show off that they were computer whizzez and so communicated in l££t.

Counterstrike players use it the most nowadays- A look at some of their fora might show you that...
Also, it seems that more than a few of our OT brethern are literate in the sub-language
We should start a l33t thread here
...or perhaps not

So in conclusion: any game played by American teens seem to get these abreviations. MoH, AoE2, CS; you name it.
