Is there a way to delete your own thread after you make it?
Also I heard you can delete posts you make after you make them. How do you do that?

You need to have the appropriate permissions to do that, which you or I don't have as members of the vB user group for normal registered members. If you would have moderator or super moderator priviledges, or your permissions would bet set so that you could do it, then it would be possible. I.e. it's not possible for you now.

You don't, only people with mod rights can do that. The "Delete this post" button at the "Edit this post" window is some sort of remnant; if you click it, it'll tell you you don't have the authority to do it.
Edit - blah

I'm sure a mod can/will help you with this thread.

deleting your own thread... that's so selfish. once you post a thread it's no longer your own - it's the property of da banana

True, a horror scenario would be someone deleting the thread they started on a whim, and thus destroying several hundred posts.

But imagine the terrible loss of such a thread as this one.
Quick - sticky this thread to preserve it for the museum of spam !

I made a thread last night which I shouldn't have. Ming deleted it anyways. But after I posted it, I thought- I shouldn't have posted this- I wish I could delete it .

that's why people can't delete threads, no hiding the evidence

Besides if you delete a thread we all lose our +1. At least if a mod locks a thread we get to keep the post count.

no posts are lost when a thread is deleted, which is the other other reason deletion of threads by common peons is disallowed

Well... not true. If I delete an on topic thread, people LOSE the number of posts they made in the thread. And if there is a "glitch" when I try to delete it (which used to happen all the time, but not much anymore) and I have to do it more than once, you lose that number of posts as well. It once took me four times to delete a thread, meaning everybody that posted in it lost 4 times the number of posts that they had made in the thread. Maybe that will make some people think twice before posting their typical "post for deletion" comments in on topic threads

btw, if you don't want to delete a thread but you want the people to lose the posts they got from this thread try this: copy the thread and delete the copy....a nice way to make +1-threads irrelevant without having to give PCRs to all who posted there

Copying threads doesn't seem to affect the post counts at all. At least I didn't see any change.

That exact reply? Are you saying that Ming has 'stock' replies for this sort of thing?

Actually there is a way to change thread titles isn't there? And of course you can edit your post to change it. Essentually you can change the entire thread opening post and thread title. The problem I have seen is that even if you change the thread title, the old one still shows up on the top of the post.
BTW how do you change thread titles? Let me try on this one, I have never done that before.
edit: weird I was able to change the words on top of the post, but not the actual thread title. How do you do that?

You can't, unless you are a mod. Spelling mistakes/typos in thread titles don't get corrected. The thread starter nearly always posts "damn, tried to change it but it wouldn't let me"

You can ask for the title to be fixed by a moderator. I have done that several times. Maybe the most hilarious, but of course also sad case was the shopping centre bomb, which I had a thread coverage about. As it was confirmed as a bomb, the title became "bomb explosion", instead of "explosion." But as the number of casualties and wounded grew, I had to get the thread title up-to-date, so I had to pester Ming and MtG about the same thread title with at least 4-5 PMs during ~48 hours as I tried to keep it updated.

No, there's no such built-in feature in vB, but they could be recovered from the SQL dump backups Markos make quite regularly. However that would mean the recovering of the whole database, which would mean that any changes made after the backup would be lost.
