Should I steal the music?
Up until recently, I have not pirated any music because it's stealing. Recently however, I needed to get a song for something we were doing in a theater class I am taking here at my Uni. Rather then hunt down the CD I wanted and pay for a whole one when I only want one song, I downloaded Kazaa lite and got the song I wanted onto a CD. Now that Kazaa is actually on my computer though, I am now very tempted to steal more music that I like. So should I steal the music, or would be that wrong?

Yes it's wrong....but I'm not exactly right, if you catch my drift.
 ACK!

It depends. I'd say go ahead if you're downloading obscure stuff, bands you haven't heard before, or radio singles you like. But if you're getting music just for the sake of not having to pay for it I'd say don't do it.

Why do ask advice for something that is ultimately your own decision?
I'd say go for it. Until the record companies get off their ass and develop a rival model that allows people to download the songs they want, then you might as well make the best of the technology that's available
The days of people heading down to their local music store to buy a CD are pretty much over. The music conglomerates can kick and scream all they want, but they aren't going to change that fact.
They'd be better off spending their money trying to develop new distribution systems, rather than hustling all these peer-to-peer networks to court. They aren't going to stop it, so if they can't beat them they may as well try and find a way to join them.

I think mp3's are a great thing. Think about it, as a respectable consumer I have no objection to buying a good CD when it comes out. However, paying $15 for a song when the rest of the album is crap??? That's just giving money to bad bands. I have a bunch of 80's songs on mp3 from one-hit wonders and I don't plan on buying those records.
Latest CDs I've boughtin the past months: Coldplay (Rush of Blood), Goo Goo Dolls (Superstar Car Wash), The Cure (Show) and Bob Marley (Legend), all bought after I downloaded some of the songs to see how good the album was.
I say download it, listen to it, and if you like it, buy it.

I have never bought a CD in my life, and I never will. I just simply haven't listened to music except in my car radio. I am a college student and money is very limited for me and I don't want to spend money on music.

I've been downloading musics ever since first versio of "winplayer" existed.
I find it almost hard to believe that theres a young person who hasnt yet downloaded a music yet. You're quite behind on the latest buddy!~
Everyone in here says that they dont download whole albums... Or are you just saying to avoid incriminating yourselves? Ya know downloading singles or albums.. its the same violation of copyright infringement. Just admit you download 10 albums of artist you never heard of per day!

I used to burn so many albums but it really becomes too costly. I suggest you get yourself a MP3 CD player if you havent already. It cuts cost on needing to burn so many albums using so many blank cds and that the mp3 cds can also serve as a backup to your mp3 library. Its real nifty.
My current project is to finish Nas, Delerium Jay-Z and Common's album and I'll have myself another 700MB worth of albums to burn. On audio CDs, thats alot of blank CDs...

If this is the case, download the music. I don't buy CDs either, except in rare cases, and every CD I've purchased has been a DIRECT result of songs I've downloaded from the net and liked enough to get into the band and buy the CD. Go for it.

It depends on what your beliefs on intellectual property are. It's wrong if you think it is.
For instance, I think since intellectual property is an authoritarian concept, it can be justified only when it increases societal liberty. If you no capacity to spend money on music, then it can't possibly help society if you don't download the song, so there's no moral issue whatsoever.
Personally, I download music, but I'm building up a legitimate collection relatively rapidly. After all, used music can be found relatively cheaply. But I still download over 10 times the music that I buy.

Or, you can just not over think it and get the free stuff.
I like the way Kid Rock put it when he was asked about MP3's:
"Oh no, so I only sell 3 million albums instead of 10. I'm so poor."

Hm. Since IP can never increase societal liberty, regardless whether one can pay, so it's always fine to download.
I like that.

Come on, dude. Everybody's doing it. Try it, you'll feel better. It's fun and it's not hurting anyone.
Why stop with music? You can download software, video, books. Books are nice, you like books, don't you?

I hardly think music from the 70's counts as new.
But yes, I already have them. And yesterday I downloaded Tequila!

Not necessarily. Not paying a poor musician for his work, for instance, puts significant constraints on his liberty.

But if others pay him, their liberties could be largely diminished. Overall, I can't see how liberty can increase.
