Republic
I sometimes switch to republic when I can build the HG - for celebration purposes. Then I switch back to monarchy after some turns - most of my cities are now size 8.
What do the experts say? Good or bad?

I did this in a MP game with SF once, and in the situation I had it worked quite well, with little net difference in trade or production, but no restrictions on warlike behaviour.

Never done it in SP. Tbh if I was in a situation where unhappiness or war restrictions were important I'd time it so I could soon go to communism.

In an AC game an early Republic makes sense with the Gardens and even better with MC.

Conquest on large/giga maps: Republic is good for quick research to Democracy (trade bonuses are much better) -> SoL then Fundy/Commie.

I keep telling myself that I will change back to Monarchy when I finish celebrating, but I get so drunk from watching the fantastic trade bonuses, that I usually stay in republic till communism, (assuming SOL). Except for the rare event when I need to override the senate.

Yep, after a few 140 or more caravan payoffs, it's tough to go back to monarchy.

Hmmm, wouldn't that be Alex. For Pat, it's "is there a T". But I like the line anyway.

Ignore War4... cold for Vancouver is nothing compared to cold for Toronto - let along Chicago!

It depends on whether you can keep cities celebrating under monarchy using the same luxury rate which keeps cities content under republic. If you can celebrate under monarchy, then switch; however if you need to raise luxury rate in order to do so, stay in republic.

Good point Xin... however, I'm like Rah. Once I've switched to republic, I seldom go back to monarchy. Only a major war will tempt me to go back.

Yes, good point, but once the cities have celebrated out (how big depends on wonders and infrastructure) only a few cities will still celebrate after switching back. (granted those should be the only ones you care about)
But the advantage of staying in Republic is that those new cities that just turned sized 3 will now celebrate and grow. And if you were really aggressive expanding, a couple of new ones will get there every 3 or 4 turns and it will continue almost all the way to SOL.

But I should practice a bit more with celebrating in monarchy since it's hard to do a side by side comparison when you're in the middle of a MP game. I need to get a better feel for it.

It might not go down too well in your games......it takes bloody ages to move guys around/to specialists so that the city celebrates in monarchy.

not really, a quick scan of cities will show you who is and isnt' celebrating and you need only adjust those cities..perhaps a few of the otherones if you haven't made the terrain celebrateable hows that for a bad word haha

Yes, but you have to switch before you can do a comparison.
