Official: Gift Base to University
now, it's clear that we will give the uni a base. but adam's poll on which one isn't quite up-to date with the new save. namely, we have a sea pod to the west, and 2 bases which are more expendable than UNRC
after viewing the save, it's clear that Zakh won't survive one more turn (there's a hive missile rover outside his last base defended by a 80% damaged gatling squad). thus:
Build the base where the sea pod is right now, and give it to him immediately! (it's just west of Xanadu, and an ok spot for a base)
Give him Heaven's Gate (south of crystalis, east of twin peaks)
Give him Shangri La (north of Metropolis)

We have sunspots. Unless we cheat, we can't give him a base anymore.

Erm... what if the sunspots end soon? When did they start?

The sunspots will continue for at least one more turnchat and the better part of the one after that, probably longer.

Sunspots last twenty years. I believe they began in 2040 (two years before the last save), though I might be off by a couple of years.
Zakharov's best chance is that he'll escape in a colony pod. If not, he's fairly doomed.

really? i thought sunspots only lasted 10? you're probably right though, i turn random events off
as for escaping, i inquired in the general forum, only to be answered by archaic, who informed me that the cut-off for restarts is 2200

Of course, we're still not really certain, but, yes, it would seem that Zakh's time as a factional leader on Planet is over. Why do sunspots always have to come up at the absolute worst possible time?

There's always the chance that Zak will surrender to Yang. Though it shouldn't really be the case, comlink contact is sometimes established by the AI towards either humans or other AI even while sunspots are active, but only when they have a unit or base next to the unit or base of the other faction.
Of course.......it's a pretty slim chance. I think we can say goodbye to the good Provost.

I don't think I've ever seen one AI surrender to another. As for what you mentioned about units establishing contact - why didn't we think of that before? We could have at least tried to sent a probe foil over before it's too late, and make contact.

I've seen it, though it's pretty rare. There's no announcement or anything, all you can do is infer it from how the two factions act.
And that might have been possible.....but again, as I said, it doesn't always work, and generally it has to be the AI who establishes contact, not the player.

Much as I hate to be a war-monger, we should consider the possiblity of sanctions.

Againat who? We're already at war with the Hive, we can't do anything more than that.

Hmm, I thought I'd go for a bit of understatement. Are we really at war with them already ? That was quick

Hrm, it's an img tag from a url, and it shows up for me... it's from

Or is off-site img'ing more difficult than it appears?
