Question about elite naval units...
Can an elite naval unit produce a leader?

If it can, where does the elite unit go (to the nearest city/nearest transport)? Or does it show itself, when the victorious ship is moved to one of your cities?

No, I'm not in desperate need for this info, I'm just being curious.

Well, this question came to me, when I read another thread, where people talked about leaders produced by flying units...

Teh problem is that leaders don't have sea going ability, or the land produced ones don't.

So they might appear and drown before you notice

I think (mind you, this happened a long time ago) that I once got a leader from a Man-of-War unit which won a battle. I don't recall exactly where the leader unit appeared, but I think it was in an island near the victorious unit, and I had to transport him to the continent using a caravel or a galleon. I think that leaders can be generated by naval units, so, and they will appear in a land tile closer to the naval unit, but I think that the tile must be neutral or your own, not enemy territory.

Heh... it would be disasterous, if the leader was born next to the capital of the enemy.... *bye-bye *

I have never seen it happen. As I have won a lot of combat with elite naval units I should have seen one by now. The only possibility for leaders to be created by naval units that I can think of, is if you attack a stack of enemy ships directly from a city. That way the succssful unit will remain in a land square after the attack. That kind of attack is so rare that it is statistically reasonable that I haven't observed it, IF it is possible at all.

Or attacking an enemy stack with a elite ship protecting a transport in the same tile. When playing SMAC, if I went over the sea with a transport, those sea (probes?) "bonus" things that we could get time to time gave an alien artifact.
