My God, yes! Must spare the Hockey Hall of Fame. Too bad nothing can save the Leafs.
But anyway, how do you equate the burning of a hinterland colony's seat of government with the burning of a nation's capitol?
Besides, the object of the war was American aggression to 'save' us from the evil Brits. Too bad we didn't see it that way and contributed militia to repel the interlopers... But, I digress.
The fact is that American plans were thwarted and British rule in North America was preserved. Sounds to me like that's a big goose egg in the win and tie columns for the US and a 1 in the win column for the British Empire and Canadian militia. No?
One Flag, One Fleet, One Empire!...
Ahem, excuse me, got carried away.

Because York (Toronto) was probably twice as big as Washington in 1814. It ain't like it was a major city when the country was formed . It was a city that was created in the 1790s and was smaller than Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. At BEST it was the 4th largest city, in a country that wasn't really known for its cities.
It'd be like you burning Philadelphia down and us burning down Ottawa. Philly is a bigger city than Ottawa, clearly (and has a healthier hockey franchise as well)

Is that what you Canucks learn about the war up there?
I assure you, 'liberating' Canada wasn't the goal of the war. Impressment and getting you damn Brits out of the Ohio River Valley were much, much, much more pressing.
And btw, both of our primary goals were accomplished in the war. And we whipped the best military in world in the Battle of New Orleans .

I seriously doubt it since the Colony of Upper Canada wasn't constituted until 1791. We had to have somewhere to put all those sensible people who fled your peasant revolt to the comfort of a civilised empire. That place was Upper Canada.
Yup, York must have been magnificent by 1815. Hmmm, I don't think there is a single building there that we try to hide behind white wash. How about Washington?

How much would you need to burn Ottawa, hockey team and all? We could take up a collection.

Oh yeah, right! When's the punch line for that joke? Face it, you folks were PO'ed that the more sensible colonies didn't bolt with you.
I love the propaganda of the 13 colonies. Only there were more like 16 or more weren't there? Must have stung that 3 or 4 of them said they'd rather eat glass than throw their lot in with your band of raggamuffins.

Right, and at Lundy's Lane a bunch of Canadian militia thrashed your asses. We'd be glad to repeat the performance for you.

obiwan and Frogger - Yeah, Chretien. *sigh* I did list our governments as a thing we can be ashamed of and Jean Chretien is a dazzling example of stupidity. I wonder, do Aussies feel the same about Howard? I'm not trying to be nasty but he does look a little Mr. Magoo-ish, no?

I usually just call him "the scrapper from Shawinigan"
Did you know his wife once used an Inuit sculpture to ward off a knife-wielding attacker who had sneaked through the laughably lax security around 24 Sussex drive?
That was the same month a guy drove an SUV through Parliament's front door, IIRC.

What is funny is that Canada's only pride from that war came as part of an unsucsessful military campaign. Yes you had a good seaborne attack on our capital- and then your forces were later defeated at Fort Mchenry. But battles aside, that war was still a draw, and your record is still a shameful 0-1-1. And as a result of that loss during the American revolution, you lost the Ohio river vallley and are permanetly consigned to minor power status while the USA is the most powerful nation in the world.

William Hull, the American commander at Detroit, had crossed the border near Windsor to issue a proclamation to Upper Canadians: "You will be emancipated from tyranny and oppression and restored to the dignified station of freedom... I come prepared for every contingency. I have a force which will look down all opposition... " Despite all his bluster, once he believed Brock had five thousand Indians with him (he really only had about six hundred), General Hull surrendered without a fight. The fall of Detroit led to the loss of all American territory west of lake Erie.
R. Douglas Francis, Richard Jones, Donald B. Smith. Origins: Canadian History to Confederation (Toronto, 1988)
Can I see General Hull's picture on the wall if I go on the West Point tour?

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

2) They have a large French speaking population. That should speed the conclusion of the "adventure" given that a whole province is likely to surrender to us before the ink is dry on the DOW.
3) It's closer than Iraq so supply problems won't crop up.
4) They deserve to be punished for inflicting Celine Dion on the world.
Have I missed any other valid reasons for invasion?

Yeah, they have clean beautiful cities that need to be liberated from the oppressive, menacing, Candian regime in Ottawa.

I can't remember the French bits other than
O Canada
Terre de nos aieux...
Ah. Here it is.
O Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

You realize that if you annex Canada, you're adding ten states that will consistently vote Democratic (well, okay, Alberta will go to the Republicans). Plus, they have a major socialist party, which the US doesn't have.

You know, that's really interesting when babel fished.
Ground of our aïeux, Your face east girds glorious florets! Because your arm can carry the sword, It can carry the cross! Your history is épopée Of the most brilliant exploits. And your value, from soaked faith, Will protect our homes and our rights. Will protect our homes and our rights.
