Production Maximum
Just an interesting tidbit:

I did some experimenting with the editor to try to get maximum production from one city using standard rules. There seems to be a hard coded limit of 499.

What we have: size 20 city, Industrious, Mobilized and producing a unit, Golden age, democracy, both waste reducing wonders, the palace, iron works, factory, manufacturing plant, nuclear plant, and the FP one square away.

The tiles are:

City tile: hills with coal: 2 food and 8 shields.

9 cattle on plains, mined and RR: 3 food, 6 shields

10 coal on hills, mined and RR: 1 food, 8 shields

1 iron on hills, mined and RR: 1 food, 7 shields

Total base shields: 8+54+80+7=149.

Total shields: 149*4=596!

But it only ends up being 499.

Anything over 500 ends up being 499.

I know this has almost no impact on strategy, but it does tell you what the maximum is. The net result is that it always takes three turns to build the 1000 shield items.

Oops. I made a mistake somewhere. Here is a file with a production of 587 shields.

Still though, the palace should eliminate all waste and corruption like it says in the 'pedia.

You can even have corruption in your capital. Miniscule percentage, but when you have hundreds of shields it can amount to more than zero.

For distance corruption, the minimum distance from the capitol is 1, not 0. That is why you still get corruption.

By the way, you can disband the FP without affecting corruption.

I suspect that DaveMcW's comment was specific to Brizey's test scenario -- it sounds like the test scenario used a capitol city, with an FP city a tile or two away. In such circumstances, the FP city has no effect on corruption in the capitol city.

(Sometimes a one-word post just does NOT get the meaning across )

I was reacting to "DISBANDING" (as in selling???) your Forbidden Palace, presumably for rebuilding it someplace else. It was my understanding that it could not be done, and now I will have to try it.

You can disband your FP by disbanding the whole city it is built in... cruel, but effective

And isn't the CN of the Palace 1 instead of 0, athough adding the Court House & Pol Station ought to be enough to round it down to 0.

Yup, FP has no effect on the city with the regular Palace, no matter how close the FP is to that city.

I realized the FP thing after a few more tests. I was just trying to cover all the bases.

Only Firaxis can make a city a distance of 1 from itself. It is funny how sophisticated their model is, then they go and do stuff like that.

Again, this was totally unrealistic. The point is that if you have a city cranking 200 shields, that is really good, since the theoretical maximum is less than 600.

Another point I forgot to make: the total food in the above posted situation is 40, just enought to support a population of 20 in a stable manner. I still need to figure out if this is really the absolute best mathematically.

A note:

In the editor, you can place cattle on bonus (shielded) grassland, even though the random map generator won't do that. With that, you can have fewer than 9 cattle squares, since grassland generate more food than plains, and therefore another couple hills.

And yes, make sure the city has a courthouse and police station. Also get the city into We Love The King Day, which also reduces shield waste (not commerce corruption, just shield waste) the same as a courthouse does. Finally, have the civ be Commercial, just in case that helps.

Finally, you can simplify the calculation a tad by putting the iron on the city square (one less category of tiles to calculate. )
