Urgent: Canadians needed.
I need some advice on good Canadian bands and their best songs so I can burn a CD for a friend*. Rock/ska/punk style songs are best but any music will be considered. I have already tempted him with the Tragically Hip's "Music at Work" and now want to unleash the full power of Canadaland.
Thanks! I love you guys! Viva la Canada!
(you will be treatly gently in the coming rule of the Starchild)
*I'm two ska CD's already in his debt and most likely many more to come.

You are such a Philestine, Starchild. You haven't experienced Canadaland until you have heard the musical mastery of William Shatner.

Now there's a title I never expected to see!!!
Also, they're not ska - but The Rheostatics are currently my favorite canadian band.

Tempting someone with the Tragically Hip on the basis of "Music at Work" is like tempting someone with Pavorotti on the basis of him clearing his throat and belching. "Day for Night" was there last really solid album, while "Fully Completely" was their best.

I disagree. Even Phantom Power was very solid.
Fully Completely is, though, quite possibly their best album, with Day For Night running a close second.

And admittedly "Music at Work" and whatever their latest album was called were slightly disappointing.

Rough Trade
the Guess Who
Northern Pikes
Bruce Cockburn
BareNaked Ladies
SNFU
...
there's a band called Nick Dangerous that used to come through town. They had some good, if little known, stuff.

Propagandhi - typical angry punk from Winnipeg (I think). Kind of unoriginal, but good none the less.
Hot Hot Heat - the guitarist went to my school, he's a nice guy. The band isn't bad either.
I Mother Earth - classic
Blindstate - I *highly* doubt you can find any of their stuff on the internet, but they're friends of mine and they sound a lot like Rage Against the Machine.
Sam Roberts - he rules! Get some now!

Jeff Healey has always been one of my favourites -- in fact, I'm listening to his Among Friends CD right now (been hunting for it a while now, finally found it last week). Classical jazz music, good beat to it. He's a kickass guitar player, on this CD he stretches out to the trumpet as well. Doesn't miss a beat

Excellent band recommendations. Now, any good songs from the ones mentioned? Asher, I'm looking at you my lil' Canuck music database of a man.
*offers cookie to make it even more tempting*
