AVATARS: internal system changed
As part of our load reducing measures, we've changed our avatar system so that custom avatars are stored directly on the server and not in the database
On the user end this should not have any kind of difference in terms of using the custom avatar feature. The only difference will hopefully be in the page generation speed.
If you experience any problems, please report them here

Thanks Markos. One benefit is that my avatar now shows correctly when I'm on the forums from work. For unknown reasons I would always get the "broken image" symbol for it. Now it works just fine.

They still disappear when it is busy (at least, they did for me yesterday just before I was posting in this thread).

If he uses Opera 7(as me), he might have problems getting the animation to work. I just see a slow motion of every animated page on Apolyton for some odd reason?

I've also found that Opera7 sometimes has problems displaying animated images.
Right clicking on the image and telling it to reload always fixes the problem, but it's still annoying.

I've reduced loading times by choosing not to view avatars.

Well done if it has.......I asked above about whether the avatars would stay now and I was lead to believe otherwise.

the avatars may stay with more people cause the general load on the server has been reduced. the settings though to de-activate avatars on high load have stayed

Ah I see. I did notice yesterday the avatars were more resilient, but they still could go at peak times.
Sorry Skanky.

In the FAQ it says that custom avatars are allowed after 500 posts yet i've seen people with less than that get one. Why is it???

When avatars were originally introduced, the rule was 500 posts or 1 year of being here. People who were here 1 year but didn't have many posts could get a custom avatar. When the rule was changed, they kept their custom avatar but couldn't switch to a different custom one.

Also, some people got to 500 posts and changed to a custom avatar. They then did something naughty enough to warrent a PCR (post count reduction) and hence had less than 500 posts whilst still retaining their custom avatar.

Both those reasons sound right, but I haven't seen anyone with a custom avatar and less than 500 posts anyway.
