newbie question about patches
Please tell me which patches I should get and where to get them.
I only have SMAC, not Alien Crossfire.

You should get the SMAC V4 enhancement from http://www.firaxis.com/downloads
Thats all you need.
As a note - you should ensure you have no write protected files in the alpha centauri directory before installing.

Most of the problems fixed are listed in the readme file.
Oddly, Firaxis fixed some things in SMACX that they never fixed in SMAC. The biggest problem in SMAC is the energy maintenance bug which undercharges you for base improvements that cost more than one energy per turn.
