If it wasn't for Adam Smith we would be making all our own pins

Surely Adam Smith was a free-marketeer, not a capitalist

I'd say Marx was the more brilliant. Both were smart guys.

I think people are voting on who they think is more important to economics. The poll is for which system, using only the policies of each economist, would win in a war.
Oh well, like it was just said in another thread. If there was a poll for most progressive president in US history, and Reagan was a choice, he would win. These polls are so damn stupid.

Good thread. Adam Smith vs. Karl Marx is so rarely debated around here.

In a war, Capitalism would win. The free workers will be able to Inovate and work arm in arm to bring solutions to the war effort. The communist style of no inovation will mean that their quality will not be up to par and they will not be able to quickly adjust things.

Both equally suck in economy, because they are so similar. Both believe a perfect order of society can be achieved without any central power. The invisible hand is part of Marx' utopia (even if it's not expressed with these words), so both utopias are laughable.
OTOH, Marx was a sociologist, an historian, a philosopher, a political activist... Clearly much more brilliant than the Scottish morals teacher.

No, it isn't. How can you have an invisible hand without private ownership? Who is going to trade?

I meant the distribution of wealth in Marx' utopia (wealth continues to be produced) will find an optimum by itself, without any power controlling this distribution, just like the capitalist utopia of Smith.

Spiffor,
Ok, yeah that was always wierd to me.
I don't think we should consider a utopia though, because these nations are suppose to be at war. How could you go to war without a government?

I thought this utopia was the final stage of human history, when all wars have been waged, the global revolution succeeded, and the war between classes becomes pointless because there are no classes anymore (the only goal of Socialism is to reach this ultimate stage, which is the true marxist Communism AFAIK). So, communist societies aren't at war, because there will be no more structurated fights once Communism is reached.

Yes, but that's not what the thread is about
edit: I think we are suppose to compare a socialist system of full government control of the economy vs. a libertarian style government.

This thread is about Capitalism v. Communism as espoused by their first practioners. You, for some reason (which I attribute to bias) want to compare a middle of the road system (socialist system) with a far right system. Marx argued for nothing more than an anarchist utopia.
So, the comparison is between a communist anarchy v. libertarian capitalism. BOTH argued for a lack of government control.

Well then the outcome should be undeterminable and this poll is very stupid.

Free market and capitalism (as it exists now) are very different.

I was more confused by his remark that Adam Smith was not in support of capitalism.

It's a witty statement, Duncan. Look outside the box .
