So have you ever thought of moving to Sweden?

I guess the reason why many of us who perceive another nation as being more progressive, but choose to remain in their native nation, is because of culture shock or cultural/lingual obstacles.

The Netherlands getting a lot of votes makes sense, from what I've heard.

I voted for Canada, given they seem a bit more market oriented than Europe yet still have most of the same social programs to help the ones that don't make it. But it is a close race with some of the Nordics.

Lest progressive: DRC or DPRK.

I don't have a broker. But if I did, I would be earning money by getting off my ass, and spending money to make money. If poor people wanna do it, they can too, and I won't demand a cut of their money.

Why, because that makes the US look better?

Because that's what everybody uses and it is a more accurate tally of GDP when comparing countries.

My definition of socially progressive means they are in acting long term policies which will benefit the most citizens possible including those yet to be born. In that light long term economic growth is more desirable then welfare payments which cannot be sustained over the long haul so the U.S. comes out number one and countries like Sweden (which do a good job of providing for the current citizens but only by strangling its future citizens) doesn't perform nearly as well.

*Edit: Spell check. God I love modern computers.

I actually spell very well thank you but my primary problem tonight has to do with Cabernet Sauvignon. An excess amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

I voted for the Dutch. I was disappointed to not see France on the list.
Mr. Fun, you probably should have left the USA off of the list, since all of our local uber-patriots voting for it will skew the results. It is like putting Clinton on a "Who is the worst leader?" poll. All the righties are for some reason magnetically drawn to it.

You could make a poll of the President most compassionate to the working class in America and Reagan would win.

I am still not sure which country is the most socially progressive yet based on the posts so far.

I want to give other Americans a good chance to field their opinions that are based on something other than patriotic chauvinism.

I don't know if the United States is the most socially progressive nation, but I'm sure others can present legitimate arguments as to why they believe the United States is the most socially progressive.

The United States definitely deserves to be on the list, even if we can't prevent patriotic blind votes.

Holland has a loooong history of respect for indivindual rights. Didn't come overnight...
Still I don't like the end result.
Went to Amsterdam, was hussled by drug pushers in mid day on central streets and saw the most brutal bar brawl.
All that in one day. And the streets of Amsterdam didn't seem too safe to me.
If that's the result I want none of it
But if that's what Hollanders want, fine

It's NOT Finland. Only progressive thing here going on is the gas price, soon to be $8 per gallon. How do you like them apples? Don't come here, don't be commie!

That's because everyone in Belorussia make ****; when everyone makes next to nothing there is no difference between them. A much better measurement is per capita income once you have excluded the distorting effects of the top 5% and the bottom 5%. The two extremes bias the results so by factoring them out you get a good idea of how 90% of the people live.

I'd bet the U.S. is very near the top once you look at things in that light.
