Proposal. Remove U.S. Military Members.
From any country that does not support the U.S. position.
Save me time, learned ones.
How many members are currently stationed overseas, making their presense felt?
In places such as Germany and Japan?
Remove them.
See how the former host country feel then.

Methinks you have an overinflated sense of your importance, at least militarily.

Of course sloww, remove US forces and deny the US the critical bases which make up one of the most important foundations of the US ability to deploy anywhere in the world. JUST BRILLIANT!
Next, we should burn all our ships..see how them barbarians like it!

 DonT meSS with TeXAS!
nah seriously... it's a two way street. You can't blackmail the countries that rely on you just because they don't like your politics and uni-lateral actions. It's on you (being the US) to convince your friends to help you. If none of your friends think going to war with Iraq is right, then you've got to ask yourself... Is it right?
And so because you're pissed off your friends don't conform to your will, you're going to alienate them?

Methinks you have a less than firm grip on reality.
I said, GePap, those that don't support.
It's reasonable to assume that some would have a change of heart, were they left on their own.
And think about it. We put our military there, they put their money into other things.
Forget that.

Sloww, very good point. The best answer can always be found in history. The Philippines booted us out (w/ the help of a volcano) and soon after got into a dispute over the oil rich Spratly islands with China. Well, the Philippines has an air force that consists of a couple of F-5's that are so old the pilots are under instruction not to turn too fast! The president of the Philippines (Arroyo) , is now bending over backwards to please Bush, and fighting a nasty little war against moslem extremists in the south as part of the war on terror, to buddy up to him. All this is being done no doubt in the hope that the US boots the Chinese outa the Spratly chain, which has no residents but has always been Philippine. The legalisms are murky, the Chinese don't care, and the Philippines needs a US carrier battle group, which has always been stationed in Subic bay, until they booted them.

I would feel much better with fewer of them around. Not that Austria has any American troops, God forbid, but if those in the neighbouring countries got lost, it would be a bonus.
SlowHand, I officially second your motion. Where must I sign?

Support? Support what? Removing troops?
I don't have to.
Maybe no one will invade. I couldn't care less if they do or don't.
What I do care is, we won't be there, and the country in question can supply their own military.
What is so difficult for you to understand?
Seriously, I know it isn't a Finn thing, so it must just be you.
After all, the U.S. isn't required to allocate troops.
So don't do it.

The Chinese have made some waves, but everything has worked out fine since we left Subic Bay. And you make a good point that our relationship with PI has probably improved since we shipped out.

Russia? Are you still stuck in the cold war?
As for North Korea, that might be the only exception here. And even then, South Korea is so well equipped nowadays that NK is very, very unlikely to win any war. Plus SK isn't involved in the Iraq debacle, and Iraq is undoubtedly the issue that prompted Sloww to post this little gem of a thread.

IIRC the Phillipinos began negotiatiing for the return of US bases before Clinton left office, and the US is now in the process of refurbishing them. It was economics, the need for a boost of their economy from Yanqui dollars, not the threat of China that made them relent. "Me love you long time Joe."

We will see, Jaakko.
Your comprehension level is below level, if you want to participate.
I said maybe they'll be invaded, and maybe they won't.
They always have been.
My point is, screw them.
They can take the chance on their own.
Easily understood. Just apply yourself.

DS, the US isn't refurbishing bases. We have temporary rights to help train Philippines forces for their war with the moslem extremists under the 'visiting forces agreement'. We also provide some equipment.
Got a link, I'll rethink...
The US is not allowed to engage the enemy in the Philippines, the forces are allowed to defend themselves however.

This coming from an AMERICAN TEXAN!!!! Thats just great.
Anyway, I support this. Because once other countries are forced to arm themselves, the US will never be welcome back. And once that happens, the US wont be a superpower.

No sparky, learn to read. I was asking which war the American troop presence is postponing. You have made absolutely no case towards showing a link between US troops and continued peace in Europe. Care to try?
