Paiktis seems to have the same opinion of French cars that I have now. My Peugeot 106, compared to other cars, feels very flimsy, although I haven't had too much of a problem with the price of parts, although they aren't as cheap as some.
I am looking for a Japanese car this time...my mother has had 2 Nissans and they have been as steady as a rock despite their age. Her 1987 Micra was more reliable than my 1997 106...
But the hunt is back on. I actually quite fancy the Almera, and I have seen a nice one at a garage for £5k (2000)...so I am going to check that one out

I honestly don't know what the prices are like over there, but I can definitely recommend Honda as a solid choice if you can afford one. They are reliable, get pretty good gas mileage, and are generally nice looking cars.
I have an Accord, and I love it.

Oh yeah, I'd definitely consider a Honda, just that I don't tend to see that many of them about, especially relatively cheaply. But if I see one, I will consider it.

Toyota, Honda, or Nissan.
Is the Almera a Euro model? Over here Nissan has an Altima.
I have a 96 Sentra and am quite happy with it.

You North Americans tend to have much bigger cars so usually have completely different lines (eg, the Taurus that Lancer mentioned doesn't exist over here).

Looking for a car that is powerful? go for Germans.
Looking for a car that is cost effective, and sturdy? go for Japanese.
Looking for a car that is a 4-wheeled humiliation? go for the Italians.
Look, it's WWII all over again!
( The statement above does not include Italian luxury cars, which make me climax vigorously just by looking on them on TV. )

You cannot go too far wrong with an old golf. Usually good performance, great reliability, safe, bigger than you think inside, but can be a bit pricey if maintenance required.
For benchmarks on all cars for prices etc, try this great dealer site where some friends of mine have bought cars and been happy

The thought of being on a motorbike scares me :scary:
Golfs are nice, but the problem is that they hold their value very well so I cannot buy a decent second hand one within my budget.

My dad is also buying a new car, and no matter how hard I convinced him against it, he's determined to get a SUV. I don't know why he's being so stubborn because the new car is for me, but I gave in and suggested xTerra.

If the car is for you, shouldn't he get you something you'd want???
Take the suv, and then trade it in for something cool!

Maybach is an old German luxury name plate that went out of business in the 1930s. Since BMW bought Rolls Royce the folks at Mercedes-Benz have been feeling put out so they've decided to revive this dead band in the hopes that people will think of it as a competetor to RR and Bentley.

That is what my wife wanted to replace her Subaru. It was only about $350,000. So we got another Subaru for a little less.
PH - I would recommend a more recent lower end car versus an older higher end. Upkeep is a killer, as you know from the Peugeot.

After my recent crash I am going to have to buy a new car too.
I am thinking of just being boring and buying another BMW, but I had also considered a jaguar.
Can anyone recommend a nice car in the £20K range?

You could be adventurous and try an Audi
Yeah Sten, I am well aware of how much mechanical work can cost And my car is fairly cheap. I won't be going for a particularly expensive car, but a fairly new one...
