While I haven't research on that but I find your statement doubtful, the main point for the US presence in Europe was not about resources, it was about geopolitics. Same thing with Vietnam.
paiktis22 is right, the US didn't do it because it was being nice.

UR, I said that the US was involved precisely because of expansionist presidents playing power games.
I also said we're one of the few countries in the world that can be self-sufficient for the most part.
