Pentium IV?
I just installed Alien Crossfire and the v2.0 patch on my new Dell Pentium IV computer. I received a message on start stating that my computer was not supported, but that I could attempt to continue - there may be crashes. Well it crashed.
Any help would be appreciated.

You might check your directx drivers, most of the game is supported by direct draw and other drivers that run the movies...effects and so forth. You can download directx 8.0 at microsoft and see if that's the problem.
Good Luck!

I have Directx 7 installed. I checked,and it seems to be working.
Is the Directx 8 from Micro$oft a beta?
Also, if this makes a difference, the OS is Windows ME.
That said, the message complained about the computer itself. Is there something in the older pentiums that is not in the newer model?

What exactly does it do when it crashes? Is it during SP movies...opening? Does it say anything terranx error or just lock up and crash to desk top? You might try switching to 600 X 800 and 32 bit if your not there all ready. Also make sure you have no conflicting devices under control panel systems.

Stuntman, The computer is fresh from the box, no conflicts.
What happens is that I get the error message just after I click "Alien Crossfire" on the opening menu. I click "Yes," on the error message option to proceed. The game then crashes to the desktop. No lockups. No exceptions or GPFs.
Maybe we should go about this in another way. Does anyone on this board have Alien Crossfire working on a Pentium IV?

I installed Directx 8.0. No change. The game still complains about the CPU.

You might want to try to start the game from the start menu. I too have had trouble with the menu that comes up after starting the game through the desktop icon.

Thanks, Whitelephant. I'll give it a try. But I and anyone else reading this thread would really like to know whether anyone with a Pentium IV machine has the game running.

Ned:
Not a P IV, but have a week old Dell Inspiron8000 running ME. No crashes to report - in fact the game seems stabler (?)- more stable - than on my home machine.
(Although until I dragged my terranx and terran icons to my desktop it would only play when I loaded the disk each time - the axstart problem I guess)
But I'll wait with interest to see if anyone has been able to run it on a P IV as I'll shortly be in the market for a new desktop and want to be able to smac.
Good luck

Anyone get a Pentium IV for Christmas? More to the point, does Alien Crossfire run on it?

Does anyone have AC working on a Pentium IV?
Firaxis has not respondeded to my e-mail on this problem. So I (we) still do not know whether the game will work on a Pentium IV.

I had the same problem, I have a custom built Pentium 4. I e-mailed electronic arts tech support and didn't get a reply yet, (it's only been 24 hours). But with a little digging and trial and error, I got it to work ( I haven't tested it extensively, but I got the the start of the game (planetfall). This is on Alpha Centauri, your results may vary on Alien Crossfire.
If you open up your Alpha Centauri Folder and edit your Alpha Centauri.ini file and change the setting:
[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0
to
[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
and save that file, when you start the game you still get that Your CPU is not supported... message but THIS time when you click OK it will bring up the game (at least it did for me).
Hopefully you can apply this information to your problems with Alien Crossfire.

Now, duber, why did you try that?

I can't speak for duber, but I know that it talks about this as something to try in the readme.txt file that came with one of the patches.

In the readme.txt file for one of the patches it does say:
"ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
If the game crashes intermittently, try adding this line."
But I took the long way and found that the error message about the CPU not being supported to seem to come from jackal.txt and using that as a base found that the program referenced the VoxelAlgorithm line in regard to a CPU error.
But anyways, I guess it pays to read the readmes. ;-)
I'm happy that all of my Pentium 4 brethren can run the game!

What's there to wait for?
a. They're already here and
2. You can get a kt133a based board and get performance that's almost as good as ddr for less.
