Never played it personally, but from what I've heard:
If you don't mind out-dated graphics and tons of role-playing then you should have some fun.

They must be lots of fan-sites out there, have you tracked those down? They should give you a good idea of what kind of community you would be joining.

one of my friends mentioned there is like a underground uo community running free servers on hacked up software. he said you can even dl uo for free to play on these servers. he was trying to get me to play with him but i said no because of my crappy modem.

I subscribed to UO for a few months and it was fun for a while as you built up your character, took on various monsters and generally chatted with some folk. I came across some genuinely funny moments (particularly arguments between other players ). In the end though, there just wasn't that much to do. So I moved on to Jumpgate and found the same problem. On the whole, good for a short term but eventually becoming a bit boring. One thing in its favour, I've only got a 56k but never really had too much problem with lag.

UO doesn't have as good of gameplay as the other MMORPGs (not that they have particularily good gameplay either... ) but it supposedly has much more roleplaying then the others - still, don't expect everyone to roleplay. I can't really say what the community is like though, since I only played it for a month a long time ago.

I want to get UO, but my mom doesn't want to pay the $30 every 3 months. I want to start my own store in Britainnia. I'm just worried about gangs of thugs that form online groups to steal your stuff! They are called Player Killer (PK) groups. stay away from them.

I wouldn't buy the game now because they changed sooo much stuff and made player vs. player combat so lame. I think I might try one of the player run servers, though, if I can find my old UO CD.

Dransik is in free beta mode - up until March 10th. Then it is pay to play.
Figures. It is free for 2 years, but the very day I decide to play it again, they announce it will soon stop.

Is there any player vs. player combat on Dransik? I've gotten rather tired of just killing monsters to gain levels to kill bigger monsters in the other MMORPG's.

Yeah, but you probably won't be able to level enough to kill effectively before the 10th (when you have to start paying for the game). If you want to pay, then no problem.
There is a massive PvP industry in Dransik (on 2 of the servers) and a 3rd server where PvP is outlawed. So you can get the best of both worlds.
