Are folks who ask to be banned so they can do something else lacking self dicipline?
Ming just said they have had "many such requests". I find it odd...why not just shut off your computer and walk away for a month or 6...
What happens when you need to quit something important, like booze, cigs or drugs? Do you call up Johnny Walker and ask them to stop shipping to the store?
What do you think of this practice?

If you have nothing better to do than posting on poly 24/7 you are a pretty pathetic human being- nothing wrong with posting and such stuff, but if you can't get out of it by yourself... get a life!

Hey Ming, maybe you could give some of these folks some of my time......
I can scrape together some banning time for the undisciplined.
Seriously though, the gambling casino's in this province have a similar policy - you can ask them to restrict you from entering......

How is this any different from some other addictions, Lancer?
Some people can quit smoking cold turkey while others need a hand.
The only problem with gambling casinos is that they don't enforce the ban. They have a financial interest in maintaining the addiction.
As for 'Poly, who are you to judge those who have requested a restriction?
I'll miss Azazel. We've had some good discussions.

As I understand it the casinos do enforce it (within reason - they don't ID evryone at the door....)
ACS doesn't enforce the ban either though so the comparison is good I think.

Apolyton has no financial stake in maintaining a 'Poly addiction.

How about it Ming? Any 'click' payoffs for ACS when we visit? Of course there are the adverts which wouldn't pay w/o traffic and may even pay more as traffic increases....
I confess, the economics of web sites are not my area of expertise but I doubt ACS posts ads for free....

When you lack self-discipline you need these little aids to get you to do anything.
I must say that in the past few years my self-discipline has gotten so much better.

People can get addicted, seriously addicted, to anything. If they need some help to get away from that addiction, so be it.

Very ignorant statement.
Trust me, beating an addiction is NOT easy, you can't just say "We'll, I'll stop doing x." and then get a life. Whether it be poly, gaming, drugs, sex....Addictions are NEVER easy to get rid of.
You'll understand in time....

You bring up a good point Lancer. I think that poly is not an addiction. People post here only because they make a rational decision to do so. Some people have a hard time doing what needs to be done though. Im sure that being banned will not help someone do what they need to do though. They will just start doing something else enjoyable instead fo doing something that they should do.

I've been addicted to pretty everything out there since one year ago and I know that the last things a troubled person needs are trite phrases like "it's not easy" and so on- if you really want to help someone who's in deep ****, then do it and help him with FACTS- give him/her your help when he seeks for it, and deny any kind of support when you know that nothing is going to change in his/her mind. After all, you're not going to give money to a drug addicted, isn't it?

What about smoking? People smoke because of a rational decision.
Any activity that is pleasureable, stimulating our dopamine receptors is potentially habit-forming.
So the question now becomes, can Apolyton be pleasureable to the same extent as cigarettes or booze?

Lancer is right. My addiction to this place displays a distinct lack of self-discipline and I'm not going to put up with it anymore.
Later. Francia delenda est...
