Nice to see this game rolling....
Sorry for the lack of a treasury as well.
Bonne chance, SG(2)!

Pretty amazing, I'd say. Five SXN gamers all between the ages of 49 to 65...the Senior partners of the firm.

Ahhh, young'uns you all are... relatively speaking.
That's my obligatory reference to my age for 2003. Watch this space in another 10 months.

First Thoughts
We are in a comfortable position. Celebrations will end next turn when Arkwright reaches size 12. The stacks of caravans outside the capital are moved into the city for safety. A sudden Barb attack killing them would be embarassing. Some of the camels can be used to create internal trade routes - we don't have any at present. The bonuses will not be huge but the routes are worthwhile as future rounds of celebrations will not require such high luxury rates.
480 - TAX RATE up to 80%; Lux 20%. Selected Xinning but not in Arkwright which provides 25% of our revenue.
Silk x 2 to Arkwright 30g x 2. Gems to Arkwright 40g
500 - Several advanced builds on the White Goods Register rushed.
Banking Swapped with Germans + Maps
Hut - Nomad
Meet Celts ... Peace, give them half an encarta of tech for Alliance and gift of 250g
520 - More White Goods finished. Arkwright builds Bank ... now producing 62g per turn.
Give Celts more science but the dialogue is cut after a couple of gifts.
540 - Spice/Hides to Arkwright 198/46g
Hut - Bridge Building
Caravans set sail for distant shores. Give some more tech to the Celts.
560 - Last of the White Goods completed.
At last the Celts share Maps The improved geography reveals a Persian and a Sioux city.
Trireme built to cruise around our continent and open up the horizons.
580 - Hut Nomad; Caravans being tickled around Arkwright ready for the next wonder.
600 - Bridgewater (Canal city) founded to aid navigation westwards.
Stephenson as a northern colony.
Jenner founded as a port for the thriving city of Iron Duke now proucing 10 shields a turn.
Meet the Persians The Wheel swapped. Peace/Gifts/Maps which reveal the position of the Spanish.
Silk to Leipzig 336g
620 - Medicine -> Engineering - for sanitation so Arkwright can grow through the roof
Barb kills Horseman near Edinburgh, but the garrison evens the loss.
Silk to Konigsberg 240g; Spice to Arkwright 90g.
640 - Shakespeare's Theatre in Arkwright - Temple sold.
Rocket founded as another northern colony.
660 - Coal to Arkwright 30g.
Meet Sioux - They have nothing to swap They now have all our science so we don't incur any research penalty. Maps.
Population nearly 4m
Treasury = 411
Six cities Xinning tech rate = 12
This is a very enjoyable game

we've really built up our city base. I do notice that we have 2 libraries in non-Xinning cities (one might be on an off turn), and 6 other cities Xinning but with no libraries. As gold is less of an issue in this game than in others, adding libraries in those cities could produce a solid boost to our research rate (cut it 30%), especially pre-railroad when caravan deliveries take centuries to get to their destinations.

SCG - Bessemer is on an off turn, whilst Trevithick was taken off Xin duties for a turn or two. My policy was to keep enough resources every turn to make around a 200g profit. The level of Xinning to use is always a hard call and that was my benchmark.
The key to science, especially when the advances become more expensive, is trading - hence the emphasis on caravans. There are two more Silk camels (near Jenner) on their way to Germany. (Possibly worth about 500 beakers). Now that the location of some other civs is known on different continents the bonuses will be even better.

Congratulations SG(2)!!
That was an extraordinary turn!! Lots of meet and greet, deliveries and internal routes commencing, Shake's!! We are looking good.
Can you help me with a word meaning please. From context, I'd guess that encarta means a long list. What is it precisely is an encarta?? Thanks.

They went well, except Latin. (Of course, I'd say there's a good chance that the rest of the class also did awful on that test.)
2000 gold? I'll remember not to spend it all in one place. (Let's see if I remember that Wonders CAN be rushed in Civ II...)
I should have it played by 1800 ET. Seriously.

840 AD: Stultus arises to power in the realm of the Space Luddites. ( )
860 AD, preturn: Sioux build Sun Tzu's (damn). Iron Duke switched to KRC.
880 AD: Barbs land south of Eye. Embassy established with Sioux. They've got around 900 gp, and are researching Astronomy.
900 AD; Rourke's Drift taken by barbs. Not knowing how to properly Xin, I accidentally let a few cities starve. Switched those cities of Xinning, now got a few cities in Xinning mode.
920 AD: Economics discovered. Now researching Sanitation. We... might be able to use a bigger Xinning cushion. Another barb landing, this one within the city radius of Eye. Walls immediately rushbuilt in Eye.
960 AD: Caravan shuffling.
980 AD: Handing off early (I've done enough damage by my ignorance, IMHO).
The moral of my turn? Don't play if you don't have a freaking clue what you're doing!
Save is attached.

Downloaded and emailed to home system. Plan on examination tonight, play tomorrow.
Must admit I'm a bit bummed to see that Vlad and I have been pushed down in the order.
When I left, I thought the plan was for obiwan to jump in, then Vlad then me, then back to normal rotation.
Early players were taking 20 turns, now prepping to go to 8 -- and I haven't even played yet.
Whatever, and Oh well...

Floppy, long-eared one,
The first turns had a lot of clickthru turns so twenty wasn't so many. I don't think anyone will mind if you play your first turn for as long as you feel is just. This will be a long game I think.
Just play.

Sorry
But then, succession games are kind of fluid in their nature... I missed my 2nd turn altogether in the Seriously Tricky Disney game
And anyway... we were down to 12 turns/player after the first 2 had played 20
So play 12, or 10, or 8, as you choose. Vlad dropped to 8 on his own initiative, I think... since I hadn't updated by the time he had posted.

Beware the latest save. Bomb Alert!!!
There are cities set to Xin with zero food. Make sure any city that is set to Xin has at least one food in the box. Otherwise, the city starves.
Also, I think SG(2) is correct in his earlier suggestion not to Xin in Arkwright. It is our primary source of ongoing cash and we have big investments (in white goods) to make that so.
I'll let others comment on building Wonders a turn at a time out in the wilderness, where no help can come from our other cities. But this point needs making, I think. When the AI builds a Wonder we are working on, it is prefectly okay to ignore the constant nag screens and continue with that wonder, until a wonder tech is discovered for something we really want. King Richard will expire relatively quickly and switching to it could trap us into building something we don't really want. All of this can be avoided by not starting a Wonder at all. Build camels and collect them until the Wonder can be built all at once.
Perhaps Hydey can explain how this wonder was lost. Did there not come a warning that the Souix were nearly finished building SunTzu?? And was there not plenty of cash on hand to buy it out from under them?? Telling the next player that you have left him lots of gold is less important than not mentioning the urgency of using it now, before hitting "enter". Or just buying it yourself to avoid the slip-up.
Is it a lesson or just a rant?? Where is the Institute??
All of this offered for future reference, as needed.
